Today Is Important
This is the day of the show, y'all
Today, March 5, is an important day for several reasons. First, it is the 13th birthday of my middle son, and as such, he is gearing up for his Bar Mitzvah. It’s a special time for me and my boys as we eagerly anticipate this extraordinary event.
A close second is that a week from now, we move into Daylight Savings Time. While losing that hour of sleep is a repulsive act perpetrated on us by some legislator many moons ago, it does mean one thing — we are in position for one of the most blessed and important days of the year: National Napping Day. A national holiday, NND is always the Monday after DST — this year, it’s Monday March 13. Starting today, we will begin the celebration by counting the days together, united by the unbreakable bond we, along with our mass of readers, share for the Nap.
In the simplest view, someone decided a long time ago that we needed DST. This disastrous decision has led to sweeping horrors that, in all seriousness, we will recount in the coming days. But as Jess Lourey once said, “There’s no point in mourning mistakes when you can fix them.” And here it is no different. The Good Lord would not have punished us with DST if He didn’t have a master plan. And that master plan included setting aside a day to celebrate Napping, and providing an important and public event to help us evangelize the Nap.
