Today
We remember
22 years ago this month, I had a few weeks absence from work. My offices at 1 World Financial were destroyed; our firm was fortunate not to lose a single soul, thank god. With the markets closed, no office to go to, and no Zoom to keep everyone connected, there was no place for a newbie like me to be, and nothing for an inexperienced college grad to offer. I sat at home, glued to the television.
There were no naps. I remained plugged into the tv, watching the scroll at the bottom change from news items to missing persons lists. In hindsight I wish I had done more to help, but the instructions were to stay put, so that’s what we did. My job was to pray and believe.
I’ll tell you who didn’t nap. The men and women who dug through the rubble, with their rubber boots melting, sucking in unbreathable toxins and seeing unthinkable horrors. Around the clock, for months. While the rest of us tried to put our lives back in order, they were trying to find lives. While we tried to move on, they were trying to turn back the clock and undo what had been done.
We write a lot about needing resets; energy boosters; down time. These heroes did what they did without that. And they still do it every day.
We salute them all, and especially remember those we lost.
God Bless their Families. Thank you for your sacrifice.
God Bless America.
