Some of it's Magic, Some of it's Tragic
But he had a good life all the way
I can’t believe I’m writing this. We’ve mentioned Jimmy Buffett here and there — he and his music have been a huge part of our lives for almost 30 years. As TAE is to the TAENR, Jimmy is the namesake of our friend circle’s Signal chat; and this weekend, we received the devastating news that he’s passed away.
And we’re hurting. Grizz put it well when he said, “it's weird: feel like he's the first artist to die where I'm truly sad,” as did Hen, who said, “It’s crazy how many people are reaching out as if he was a member of our family. My other buddies all know that we are the Buffett crew.”
It’s been amazing to see so many eulogize him so beautifully, including musicians from Sammy Hagar to Dave Matthews, Joe Walsh to Paul McCartney. We plan to spend the week eulogizing him in our own way — through the lens of napping — but we’ve got the whole week to do that. For today, I wanted to send a message of love and luck to Jimmy’s friends and family and everyone who loved him.
just texted me — I’m reminded that our friendship was cemented in the summer of ‘98 at my first or second Buffett show, where we ran into Smiley and God (that’s about all I can put in writing). He said, “If you’re not drinking and listening to Buffett today, GFYS.” Right on, K-Man — I’m gonna go fix myself a margarita (lots of salt).
