Napper's Delight
What you hear is not a rest
H/T to KLS for the title of today’s post!
As I’ve discussed recently, my nighttime sleep routine has not been at its strongest, assuming the goal is to refresh body and mind (if you think of nighttime sleep as a way to kill time between watching horror movies and having breakfast, then I’ve been crushing it). In response, I’ve begun a new exercise and diet regime — more to come on that — that has me getting up earlier and using more energy than usual. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I’ve been getting tired earlier than usual, not that napping is always a “need to have” thing.
Rapper’s Delight, the Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 hit that introduced hip-hop to the masses and gave rise to several instances of “napper’s delight” in the media — see below!
Unfortunately, other priorities have thrown off my napping, and Evan has had a similar experience (refuah shleima to your congregants in need, B”H). Fortunately, Hen has been napping down the fort for the rest of us sinners.
Well, we somehow turned things around today. Evan found time for 20+5 with solid loss of consh. Hen went under as well, and I snagged a 30-minute flex on the couch, with a new napping PED I’ve been trying out and will profile soon. While I didn’t lose consh at 11:30 (not that you always have to), I doubled down and went for a Moon Pod 30 around 3, dancing the razor’s edge between consh and what lies beyond.
A true napper’s delight, indeed. And now, more napper’s delight!
The first instance of Napper’s Delight comes from Gefilte Joe & the Fish and appears to date back to the late 70s. White Jewish guys stealing Black guys’ music and making it their own? Not going there…
The second instance of Napper’s Delight is from the title of an episode of Cory in the House, a 2007 sitcom I didn’t know existed before writing this post.
Dean Jones, the guitarist/trombonist/singer of Dog on Fleas, released a solo album in 2007. Its title, you ask? See above — this is the third instance of “Napper’s Delight” to date. Fun fact: in 2020, Dog on Fleas was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children’s Music Album category. They wound up losing to Joanie Leeds, a friend who dated the drummer from my law school band and also taught music at Hen’s children’s school when they lived in NYC. True story.
The fourth instance of Napper’s Delight was posted to YouTube in 2013 by Mike Schubert (Schubes17). He says that napping is his super-power — our kind of guy!
And of course, today’s post is the fifth and most recent instance of Napper’s Delight!
