Nap of the Day
Anyone wanna bet on the ponies?
Happy Bundy Sunday Funday, y’all! After a bittersweet week remembering the late Jimmy Buffett, we’re back with our regularly scheduled programming. Today, I wanted to teach something to everybody who isn’t familiar with horse racing (and perhaps even some who aren’t).
Earlier this year, I created a Google Alert to keep me in the know with all napping-related news so I, in turn, can keep all of you in the know. I started to get a lot of stuff about the “nap of the day” and got excited — but I soon learned that these articles were about horse racing had little to nothing (really, nothing) to do with our raison d’etre here at TND.
It turns out that in the world of horse racing, the “nap” or “NAP” of the day is a reference to the best tip of the day for someone who bets on horse races. It’s said to derive from “Napoleon,” a French card game where the best hand in the game is called, cleverly, a “Napoleon.” The next best tip of the day is called, also cleverly, “NB.”
Not sure if Napoleon Bonaparte was a napper, but I’ve been planning on getting a few more Famous Nappers on the board over the next week or two — will add him to the list if the research pans out. See you tomorrow!
