Friends Forever
I read an absolutely accurate quote the other day. It said that the only person who will truly appreciate and celebrate when you are more successful than they are is your father. I know it’s true, because I’m fortunate to have seen it from all sides. My grandfather with my father, my father with me and me with my kids. It stuck right to me as a concept because it’s so true. And while it won’t take much for my kids to outdo any successes I’ve had, it will (and does) literally make me the happiest person on earth every time they do.
So I got to thinking: what other situations could you take such enormous happiness from someone doing some thing that you’d like to do, but can’t. And I realized that in our TAE chat room, there is such extreme pleasure and excitement when someone else takes their nap. And all the more so when you really want one but can’t have one and someone else comes through and is able.
I followed along this week as my good buddy Matt had some very long and exhausting days. I was immeasurably happy when he reported today that he had a “great“ 45 minute nap. Here I was aching for one myself, but knowing he was able to achieve it, surpassed any joy I would’ve had, had I been able to take my own.
That is the magic of the nap.
