Don’t Autosteer and Nap
You can’t make this stuff up
I saw a headline this week that caught my eye: Sleeping Tesla Driver Using Autopilot Chased Down by German Police. I thought the dream of napping while driving was a uniquely American idea, but seeing this headline, I had to know more. For the German speakers out there, here is the Bavarian police’s press release.
By way of background, Tesla offers a variety of autopilot/auto steering options, each with a kind of fail safe where a driver has to exert force on the steering wheel every so often or the autopilot will shut off. Apparently, there a variety of hacks out there to keep Tesla autopilot engaged, which some drivers use to nap behind the wheel — there are videos all over YouTube teaching people how to do this. In this case, der mann used some kind of steering wheel weight to keep his car driving itself for at least 15 minutes while the police tried to get him to stop.
Not a whole lot more to say than don’t nap and drive — do what I do and nap while your wife drives.
