What it was like to be acquired by GitHub, why I am so excited about Gatsby, and many other things
Hey,
I haven't sent an email here in a long time! I'd love to know how you are doing, what are you thinking about these days? (I'm really curious and this is my actual email, so hit reply and let me know!)
I've been writing a lot lately and I'm going to start using this list to share some of my more private and unpolished thoughts. Below are a bunch of ideas I've been considering, clicking any link will take you to my web of notes on that topic. Feel free to explore!
Just do me one tiny favour while reading: if anything triggers thoughts or ideas hit reply and let's chat about them!
First of all, I have started to Write to think and it's been transformational in clarifying my ideas and helping me think creatively. Specifically, I copied Andy Matuschak's Writing practice into My morning routine (although I call it Thinking practice) and love it.
That is critical for my new job at Gatsby, because Gatsby is inventing a new category of websites and working on becoming the best low code tool to build websites.
Elsewhere in React-land, I have been deeply immersed in CSS-in-JS again with some explorations around restricting CSS with strict-ui and "solving" Layout in React.
As for life, I explored this concept of Investing in force multipliers, particularly related to creativity and innovation (Invent by combining things in new ways). I also want to Talk to people more and increase my Work in public. (hence this newsletter and my frequent callouts to talk to me 😉)
I have also started digesting my experience at Spectrum, particularly some non-technical things I would do differently with hindsight and how Getting acquired was the most stressful time of my life .
I'll close this off with a reminder to hit reply and let me know what you think about any of this! I'd love to hear from you.
Talk soon, Max
