There are no raccoons in this edition of the newsletter.
Hi y’all! I’m done moving, and as far as I’m concerned I will never move again, but I’m feeling very at ease in the new house already and the general sense of busyness and change-anxiety are both coming down pretty quickly. I might even send this old newsletter thing out more consistently over the summer, especially since my personal assistant, Skelly, is back around.
Meet Skelly. They have a strong preference for rainbow decor but not so much rainbow capitalism, and like sunny days, and books that make most of us cry. Not Skelly though. No tear ducts. If you’d like to catch Skelly’s summer book suggestions, they’ll be on Bluesky with me for the season.

Family Night was chosen to be a part of Best Small Fictions 2025. I am so grateful to the SmokeLong Quarterly editorial team for choosing it as the fiction winner of the 2024 A SmokeLong Summer workshop prize, and nominating it, as well as BSM guest editor Robert Shapard, and the whole team at Alternating Current Press. Pssssssssssst! There’s an audio version of this on the site, too!
National Flash Fiction Day is June 14, and I’m thrilled Our Daughters Never Seem to Come Home to Us will be a part of it, going live at FlashFlood at 7:10PM EDT, June 13! (Thank you time zones, I feel like I get to be early to the party!)
This is Milkweed, another flash story in the Horsegirl collection, will be a part of the Exposition Review “Spring” issue, going live June 21. As a note, I've started marking these stories with a silly little horse emoji on the website, aaaaaand I might be working on a Horsegirl novella in flash. Okay not maybe, I totally am.
Look for the horse! Happy Pride! Consider celebrating by giving queer and trans people money directly for their work or affirming care fundraisers, or allies can cover margaritas and mocktails for the month, you know we’re thirsty out here. And to make it easy if you’re not sure where to start, a few places that need your help can be found here.
I told you, no raccoons this time, only Potato cat who is vaguely raccoon shaped.
Okay Potato, thanks for always laying in doorways and at the top of stairs…
