Five-ish things: new stories, my own fanart, required reading, and a raccoon.

Hey folks, here are five-ish things that didn’t make me upset, including a raccoon, as promised. Stay safe out there.

  1. Horsegirl, the story: pick up a digital copy of Messy Misfits Volume 6: Filth here for 2USD.
CW: kink, blood (listen, you see the title, yeah?)

White text on an aqua background says Horsegirl by Ani King. Underneath that is the first paragraph of the story in question: "I’m not a horse girl, but I’ll be your horse, girl, your wheat-haired Palomino, you can ride me through the fields between our houses, spaces that turn from corn, clover, from wildflowers to dusty lots that only grow cigarette butts and beer cans, girl you can ride me fast through town where my family name means nothing, but your family name is everywhere: the park named after your grandparents where we used to play, your mom’s real estate bench ads where her teeth are long and straight (like yours), your dad’s closed car lot, you can find me when the banks show up and start taking things, you can ride me rough on wooded trails when you’re sad about your old horse being someone’s new horse, you can card your fingers through my tail when all you can think about is what you’ve lost, girl, you can check my feet and my teeth, you can brush me down and fall asleep in the stall crying, girl,"

  2. Horsegirl, the collage:

A collage art piece with layers of dark blue, bright green, and print paper as the background. Trees are represented by torn brown paper, stitched over the blue background with twine. The trees have white, puffy paper flowers glued on as tree tops. A circle of layered gold sequins makes up a sun, and a few are scattered in the dark blue like stars. A handrawn, black and white ink image of a horse woman is covered at the waist by a cut out photo of a daisy field. A strip of paper says I'm not a horse girl, but I'll be your horse, girl. Another says HORSEGIRL, HORSEGIRL, HORSEGIRL.

Also, can you make fanart of your own story? Is that a thing? Or is just wishful illustration?
  3. Making Étouffée, in Hotch Potch Literature & Art, is the longest story I’ve written in years, come for the thumbnail as a weapon content you know you need, stay because I made you hungry. That’s right. I did this to you.

“When Aunty Lola deveins shrimp for étouffée she does it with that same long thumbnail, which she keeps naked and dagger-edged.”

  4. When Aerosmith and Run DMC decide to co-parent, by Melissa Llanes Brownlee. Every story Melissa writes is my favorite.

  5. Manual for an American Novice in a Small Indian Town by Tara Isabel Zambrano will be in Best Microfictions 2025 (plus another piece!!!) and is one of my all time favorite stories.

  6. LOOK AT THIS FLUFFY ASS RACCOON:

Picture of a softly furred raccoon sitting in the grass, looking right at the camera, with a blurry forest in the background.
