are movies dead?

Dear friends,

Happy March! I hope you are all doing fine with the changing weather.

So... it was the Oscars last week! After so long, I tuned in again, and it gave me so much life. It kind of makes me sad how I grew out of watching movies these past few years. I was just too caught up with other things, and there just wasn't enough space for them in my life.

But it wasn't just that. There's this general perception that movies are dead. With the advent of streaming services, seeing a movie in a theater isn't what people want to do anymore. There's a lot of think pieces out there saying that movies are getting worse by the year. I kinda bought into that narrative and grew despondent of big franchises taking over the theaters (I don't mean to call out Marvel.)

letting the days go by

Good afternoon,

It's been a slow February, but here we are with another round of content!

For this letter, I write about the musical, American Utopia, the Stop Making Sense concert film, and one of my favorite coming-of-age movies, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

I've become too fixated on Talking Heads and David Byrne that I mention them multiple times in this newsletter. Please bear with me.

reality bites

Hello friends,

I hope everyone's well.

This week, I share a few of my favorites: The White Album by The Beatles, Slacker by Richard Linklater, and a recent one, Joe by John G. Avildsen.

I also share what I've been listening, reading, and watching lately, and the list is more extensive than before. Added to this newsletter are a few visual excerpts for some eye candy.

HNY

hi friends,

today marks the last day of 2024.

i'm a little wary of getting too hyped up about the upcoming year. some of us had a good year, and some of us had a not-so-good year.

some of us had it somewhere in between, like me.

the season for giving!

hi friends,

it’s me again, and i’m back with a few essays.

but before that, i want to share a few things:

first, i attended a wedding a few days ago and caught the bouquet during the toss for the first time ever. i pretended to be cool about it, but i was secretly thrilled. it's fun to play fantasy and be congratulated for something that hasn’t happened yet. here's a pic of me shortly after:

💭 this is 29

dear friends,

it's been a week for me. i've been planning my 10 year high school reunion in the last half of this year. one part of me is psyched. another part is reliving my teenage angst from the weight that comes with organizing this event.

at the same, i'm planning my college reunion that will be happening a week after. a different energy, but i find myself connecting with a bunch of people from multiple lifetimes ago piecing together this party.

i also attended a friend's wedding this month; gathering with so many old faces i haven't seen in forever. everyone's all grown up, but it's like time had stopped and everything is still the same as when we were 17.

on love

dear friends,

today marks the first day of the "ber months."

one of the things i love about being pinoy is that we're overenthusiastic about everything. my lola is set to have christmas decorations up by september 10.

too early? not in manila it isn't.

on leaving social media

dear friends,

last week was the full moon in aquarius. if you're sensitive to the moon, you might've felt emotionally charged in the last few days.

is it crazy to think you could be affected by the moon? it depends who you ask. if you ask me, i think it's crazy to think you're a separate entity from it.

if you're a fisherman (you probably aren't) you know the moon is used to gauge when fish will be feeding. if you're a farmer, you know before the full moon is when the ground is wet and is best for planting. if you're a woman, you know our menstrual cycles sync with the moon cycles.
