#87 Geometric ubiquity
Issue #87 Geometric ubiquity
8th November 2023
It's been quite the week.
Professionally: It's a time of new beginnings. I taught a workshop with the Wonderland VO community, spent a fascinating day teaching improv to animators at UCA Farnham and re-launched new versions of my classes Improv Cinema Club, Emotional Connection and Truth in Comedy (this final one actually starts on Saturday, there's two places going spare if you'd like to join). And I've just this moment finished going through over 70 applications to audition for my Coen Brothers-inspired long form show at Hoopla too.
Personally: With help from my wonderful family, we've been continuing to improve the house. As I finally start moving into the new home office, Dad and I built my Flexispot standing desk and I've finally succumbed to the geometric ubiquity of owning a KALLAX. Radio also has a dog door into the garden and we've upgraded the front door with a smart lock that automatically locks and unlocks as we get near it. THE FUTURE!
Rule of three
[Film] Scrapper
I saw this on a recommendation, I hadn't even heard of the film. It's about a 12-year old girl, fooling the authorities so she can live alone after the death of her mum. You might be thinking it doesn't sound like an uplifting watch. But stop thinking that because it's genuinely thrilling, funny, profound and humane.
[Podcast] No Worries If Not!
I've loved @vulgadrawings on Instagram for ages but its creator Lily O'Farrell has just launched a fascinating podcast called No Worries If Not! about women and internet culture. I've got a lot out of it so far and can particularly recommend all the myth-busting that goes on in the episode about The Alpha Male. In fact, I nearly got into an argument on the subject at an organic Kombucha stand in Guildford today. But that's just my life.
[Newsletter] Dense Discovery
Another recommendation, this time from the man, the legend, Fred Deakin. As soon as I started reading this newsletter, I knew I was subscribing. It's also perfectly titled - a densely curated list of marvellous stuff to discover. And it looks pretty too.
Spotlight
I'm thinking of putting on an INTENSIVE two day version of my popular Mockumentary Now! workshop on 4th-5th December (12 hours of teaching over those two days). If you'd be interested in attending then read more about it here and register your interest by signing up to the pre-order list. If I get more than 8 people wanting to explore the topic then I'll run it. It's immense fun and will suit the intensive workshop format wonderfully. I'll cap the class at 12 people so we can all work really closely on the format.
Here's a lovely testimonial about the class:
"I was worried that this format would be heavily premise-based. I think with any other teacher it might have been. Instead, Chris taught us to tap into characters and unlock details intuitively. In the end, we all looked very very clever and hilarious, nearly effortlessly. Very satisfying!"
