#71 Staff training
Issue #71 Staff training
19th July 2023
Hi there.
A slightly shorter newsletter this week.
I'm in Poland on a retreat with other improvisers, from all over Europe, who are also teachers and leaders in their own communities.
It's so nice to spend time talking and playing together without always having to be the one that leads everything. It feels amazing.
As a freelancer, it's sometimes hard to take time off from paid work to grow as a performer and practitioner. I'm so glad I made the time this week.
It's in my calendar as Staff Training.
Rule of three
[TV] Jury Duty
This reality TV show follows the inner workings of a jury trial in the US. Except it isn't a real trial and everyone involved is an actor apart from ONE GUY. I love seeing improv used in new ways and the whole cast are truly exceptional improvisers. Plus Ronald, the clueless Truman at the centre of the whole thing, is actually really sweet and good hearted.
[Book] Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain
Everything you think you know about the organ you think with ... is wrong. There is no left/ right functional dichotomy. No lizard brain with an advanced mammalian cortex stuck on the front. It turns out the real story of our brains is more complex and much more interesting. This is a short, eminently readable book about neuroscience with something mind-altering on practically every page.
[Games] Whose Kombat Is It Anyway?
Have you ever wondered what a video game version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, made by the people who coded Mortal Kombat, would look like? Well, wonder no more.
Spotlight
We've had a couple of drop outs for the workshop Game of the Show that I'm running with Katy Schutte next week. It's a two day event running 10am-5pm, 24th-25th July at Theatre Deli in London and it initially sold out in under 24 hours. Katy and I rarely get the chance to teach together, especially for two whole days, so do get in touch by replying to this email if you're interested in taking one of the newly available places. The price is £200 for 12 teaching hours with an incredibly fun cohort of amazing improvisers already signed up.
Radio contact
I decided to see if I could fit in Radio's crate. I could. Radio was unimpressed.
