#42 The denouement
Issue #42 The denouement
28th December 2022
Hiya!
I hope everyone is enjoying themselves.
This too will be a slightly briefer issue as I am full of chocolate orange and unable to type. I've mostly been indulging in festive television - The Detectorists, The Gone Wrong Show and Inside No. 9 are all highly recommended if you have some spare time this week. Also, a new trailer for Doctor Who featuring an obscure character from a 1980s comic strip that has me VERY excited.
And then there was The Traitors...
Rule of three
[TV] The Traitors
I came late to this and binged the entire thing over three days. It's a reality show based on a game we used to play at uni called Mafia (or sometimes Werewolf). Have a look at the trailer to see how it works. Not typically my kind of thing, but the critical praise was overwhelming from all sides. It's in a class of its own as far as this sort of programming goes - slick, engrossing and keeps you shouting at your TV right up to the denouement.
[Music] Fred Deakin
Fred is my brilliant colleague in the improv team, Project2. He is also, amongst other things, an award-winning musician. Both Katy & I used to listen to Lemon Jelly in college. I'm pleased to report that his annual FredMix just dropped, a glorious selection of tracks pulled together from the mountain of vinyl he acquires each year. Whenever I put one of these on, Laura comes into the room and says "Why do you suddenly have good taste in music?"
[Game] Fortnite (again)
I'm still playing Fortnite online with a delightful group of friends and improvisers. This week I released my latest film Chris Mead being good at Fortnite for 187 secs. The joke is that it's taken me over two years to pull together enough footage to fill even this meagre runtime. We play every Friday as an excuse to catch up and chat; the game is very much a secondary consideration. Please feel free to reply to this email if you'd like to join us.
Spotlight
I run a twice-monthly Zoom Improv Office Hours as part of this newsletter's premium subscription, where anyone can come and chat about improv with like-minded souls for an hour. They are always fascinating and life-affirming for me. The last one of the year is on Friday 30th December from 10-11 am UK time. I've decided to open it up to anyone who reads the newsletter. You just need to click this link on Friday to gain access. The topic will be "What are your improv plans for 2023?" I hope to see some of you there.
