#41 La la la la la la la la la la
Issue #41 La la la la la la la la la la
21st December 2022
Season's greetings, friends.
This will be an extremely streamlined issue as I have presents to wrap, a log fire to enjoy and a list of the Best Films of 2022 to get through.
Have a wonderful week, if and however you celebrate, and I'll see you soon in the remarkable hinterlands of Twixmas.
Inside our hearts, the glorious cheer!
Rule of three
[Tradition] A Spaceman Came Travelling
In the Mead household, we have a tradition that centres around Chris de Burgh's Christmas masterpiece, A Spaceman Came Travelling. The song itself is about an alien meeting Jesus or something. It doesn't really matter. The point is that it has a fantastic chorus that goes la la la la la la la la la la and the tradition is to sing it at the top of our voices every time it comes on. Every. Single. Time. You can hear it from a block away. We are terrible neighbours. For me, the tradition got even better when we discovered this cover version by Celtic Woman. I find it fascinating and terrifying in equal measure. Finally, Laura wrote a song ABOUT the fact we sing the song, to the tune of the song.
[Stunts] Danny MacAskill
Danny MacAskill takes to the streets of San Francisco on his bike. I find his videos life-affirming and the stunts so effortless and well-judged, especially the tennis court one. I appreciate him keeping in some of the crashes as well.
[App] minutiae
When I raved about BeReal a couple of weeks ago, I was pointed to minutiae by several readers. It's a beautiful art project that sees you capturing an image for every minute of the day over the course of four years. I love the discipline of it. You can read the creator's manifesto here.
Spotlight
My episode of the Yes But Why? podcast came out last Monday. Amy is a wonderful host, and I ended up talking more about my childhood, my creative practice and my outlook on life than I did about improv specifically. Lots of stories in here that I don't think I've ever told publicly before.
Radio Days
One whole year of this guy being a force for good in the world.
