#163 Highly nutritious

Blues. Words. Mirrors. Stories.

23 APRIL 2025

Hey, team!

I’m on my way to the Liverpool Improvisation Festival where I’ll be part of the ensemble learning and rehearsing a new format called Taxi Tales under the direction of Mark Smith for performance this coming Friday and Saturday.

And then, after that, it’s back to my childhood town for the almighty Southend 48 Hour Improvathon.

Another full week of improv. Will it ever stop?

No.

(I don’t want it to stop.)

Rule of three

An illustration of a burning juke joint.

[Cinema] Sinners
Finally, a film that DEMANDS to be watched in a cinema. Yes, 1930s gangster twins vs vampires in a juke joint at midnight is already an amazing concept. But there’s a musical sequence before the vampires even appear that has immediately jumped into my Top 10 sequences to ever be put to celluloid list.

The alphaguess logo.

[Puzzle] Alphaguess
Blame top improviser Lauren Shearing for bringing this to my attention. Alphaguess is another daily word puzzle that’s incredibly addictive once you start. It’s also very simple - type in any word and it’ll tell you if the target word is before or after it in the alphabet. As Lauren points out, there are two ways to play - least guesses or least amount of time - they require very different strategies.

Vic Michaelis crouches over a desk.

[Podcast] Very Important People
Still on the Dropout train. Very Important People sees improvisers get dressed up in costumes and prosthetics without knowing what their characters are. Just before they start filming they get to look in the mirror and then it’s off for a 20 minute improvised interview with host Vic Michaelis. I was literally (not figuratively) gasping for breath, I found the Lisa Gilroy one so funny.

Spotlight

Untold stories logo.

Really excited about this new night at Hoopla.

Teresa & Folusho present Untold Stories is an improv night starring incredible improvers like Teresa Senyah, Folusho Falegan, Monica Gaga, Kemah Bob, Alicia Mugford and more!

It’s a night of joy, laughter, games and scenes shedding light on the stories and experiences of black female identifying improvisers that aren’t usually voiced on the improv stage.

I’ve had the wonderful experience of working with Teresa a great deal in the last few years and think she’s a truly phenomenal improviser. In fact, the whole line-up looks awesome. New nights are hard to get off the ground so please buy tickets early so they get more dates in the diary.

Movement for change

Love this article by Katy Bowman in which she compares movement to nutrition in a really helpful way. Find out how to make your walks highly nutritious.
