#137 Thud!
Thud! Vroom! Sigh! Laaa! Wooo!
23 OCTOBER 2024
Hello.
I fell over during a show and now my ankle looks like a tennis ball. How are you?
Yep. It was bound to happen, the way I throw my aging 40-something frame around the stage, but in Oslo last week I missed a step and landed awkwardly on my ankle with a resounding thud!
Always nice to have an improv war story when comparing scars like that bit in Jaws.
So yesterday I spent much of the day submitting myself to the tender mercies of an NHS minor injuries unit, only to find that it was all soft tissue damage and no fracture. Phew!
Apparently, I have to rest it, so a great excuse to put my feet up and consume some culture.
Rule of three
[Movie] Will & Harper
This documentary had me in bits. Will Ferrel goes on a road trip with his friend Harper, who has spent her life collaborating with him, but only recently transitioned. Watching the two of them genuinely grappling with their evolving dynamic is incredibly affecting, they’re both in their sixties and perhaps haven’t grown up with the language they need to express themselves clearly. Ultimately, although the focus appears to be on what has changed, it’s the things that have stayed the same which had me in tears.
Also, Kristen Wiig provides the theme song and it’s beautiful.
[Comic] The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
I think we can all agree that 90% of comics are about people punching each other in ever more grandiose ways. But this comic is about Kali, the Hindu goddess of death, time and change becoming mortal for one lifetime and learning something new about loss. It’s exquisite.
[Music] Amélie Farren
I don’t think anyone who is still in high school has the right to be this wise and talented. But here we are.
Spotlight
I am so happy to be reuniting with my wonderful former Maydays colleague, Jenny Rowe, to perform a duo show at Hoopla’s The Mixer night on Saturday 2nd November, starting at 19:45. Jenny is such a delight and I’ve missed performing with her a lot. Come along and see if we’ve still got it, it’s pay-what-you-want!
