Issue #126 The best thing I’ve ever recommended
7th August 2024
Hello, pickles.
Ah, August - when everyone I know travels up to Edinburgh and I have no work to do.
What a lovely month! I’m looking forward to relaxing, catching up on some TV & films and cooking more vegetarian meals.
This newsletter also features the best thing I’ve ever recommended.
See if you can work out which one it is!
Rule of three

[Film] Hundreds of Beavers
It’s this one. This is the best thing I’ve ever recommended. It’s the pinnacle of modern film-making. I can’t even describe it. Maybe, I don’t want to describe it? Ok, I’ll have a go - If the Lumière brothers directed a RPG progression fantasy about fur trapping (with stunts). Track this thing down at all costs, and if you can’t find it, you can download it here.

[Improv] STATUS
STATUS is an amazing monthly improv magazine. Edited by the dashing & talented Feña Ortalli, it’s an absolute marvel packed full of interviews, improv theory and discussion. Full disclosure, I’m currently submitting a Longform thought for it each month. BONUS: This month’s cover star is FRIEND OF THE NEWSLETTER Charlotte Gittins. Subscribe today.

[Theatre] Mnemonic
I first watched Mnemonic 25 years ago when I was 19. It blew my nascent theatrical mind out the back of my head. This week, I watched the revival at the National Theatre. It’s a play about memory, about how the act of remembering is ultimately a creative act. And as I watched, I started to remember snatches from the original show - and in those moments I felt intimately linked with a past version of myself - the man I am and the boy I was. Pretty cool.
Longform thoughts
If you like The Harold, then you’re going to LOVE The Mega Harold.
This week, I present seven New improv formats. You’re welcome!

I took myself off to see hundreds of beavers at the cinema in my own, well worth it - the blu ray has also come through my letterbox today so I'm going to wear that out!
