Coffee. Cancelling. Crowdfunder. Couple.
Issue #122 Any given rabbit hole
10th July 2024
Hello.
There’s never enough time to do everything you want to do.
According to Four Thousand Weeks - the answer is to choose a few things that light you up inside, and concentrate on them.
In the spirit of that, I’ll keep this introduction short and get on with the rest of the email.
Ok, have fun, byeeeeeeeeeee!
Rule of three
[Coffee] Chemex
Who are you, Chris, and why aren’t you talking about tea? I don’t drink coffee but I’ve been slowly raising my percolation game in order to make the perfect cup for Laura. Because I’m a geek and can’t help but fall deep down any given rabbit hole - I find myself, at time of writing, using a method that involves weighing out precise quantities (Hario v60 scale), hand-grinding the beans (Porlex II mini) and pulse pouring water in measured bursts (Fellow Stagg EKG kettle) into a Chemex pour-over glass coffee maker. I still don’t like coffee but it does smell nice and the Chemex is a beautiful object that deserves its place in the Museum of Modern Art.
[TV] Douglas is Cancelled
Continuing my self-guided stroll through stories that address the power and pitfalls of social media (Yellow Face, The List) - I watched this new limited series from Steven Moffat. Not sure if Mr Moffat is quite the right person to dissect issues of sexism and misogyny but I’m still very much a fan of his authorial voice and there’s certainly a lot to enjoy here. And a lot to argue over. As I’m off social media, I haven’t gone online to see how it was received. Which is sort of the point, hey?
[Improv] Bristol Improv Theatre
It’s with real sadness that I found out today that the Bristol Improv Theatre is struggling financially to a point where they have to launch a crowdfunder to help bridge the gap as they seek to become profitable again.
The BIT was the very first bricks and mortar theatre in the UK dedicated to the art of improv. They are pioneers. Over the years, I’ve been consistently impressed with every single iteration of their management team - they have excelled both in the improv they produce and the community they have built.
If you have the resources, please do consider donating and why not come along to the Get-Together in July celebrating their new charity status. Please say hi if you see me, as I’m planning to attend too.
Spotlight
Laura and I are presenting our first ever duo show at the Hoopla Pre-party, 6pm this Saturday 13th July. The performance also coincides with the 20th anniversary of going on our first date and our 13th anniversary of getting actual married.
The show is part of my Duologues cycle and we’re calling it The Morning After. We also need someone to volunteer to have Radio sit on their lap while we’re playing.
Longform thoughts
This will be my general Batbelt for everyday carry - I’d obviously swap certain items out in specific situations, like going to the Arctic or appearing in improvised Chekhov.
Comics and improv in one post? Yes, please! Find out what would be in My improv Batbelt.
