Issue #118 A mad messy big swing of a show
12th June 2024
Hi, Cherubs!
Chris Mead here.
Still transitioning to a gut friendly diet.
Still trying to do too much improv.
Still actually spending most of my time playing with my dog.
This week, The Mighty Pirates opens at Hoopla. I’ll say more about it in Spotlight below, but in brief, we need an audience for the first performance so if you’re not doing anything this Saturday 15th, please come down to support us. It’s a mad, messy, big swing of a show and I’d love for you to experience it.
Also, consider the following ...
Rule of three
[Cinema] Gasoline Rainbow
It’s beautiful. I can’t put it more succinctly than that. Gasoline Rainbow is a road movie in the genre of one more adventure before we have to grow up. But the stylistic choices - using non-professional actors, overlapping spontaneous dialogue and a documentary camera - blur the line between fiction and reality. I regret to say I hadn’t heard of the Ross Brothers before watching this gem, but it turns out all their work straddles this line. If you have MUBI and live in the US/ have a VPN - I fully recommend watching everything they’ve ever done (as I have over the last week).
[Music] My 21st Century Blues
I’m massively behind here - RAYE won six times at the BRIT awards earlier this year, smashing all previous records - but I heard My 21st Century Blues for the first time this week, and I can’t stop playing it. RAYE is such an incredible artist - by turns vulnerable and confrontational but always lyrical, thoughtful and with a voice that just staggers me every time I listen to it.
[Update] Things I’ve already mentioned
Here is a quick list of new projects by artists I’ve mentioned in previous editions of Rule of Three. I don’t want to repeat myself, but I also don’t want you to miss out.
If you’re reading this on the day of release (12th June) then today’s Connections puzzle is really brilliant.
Kevin Kelly wrote up another 101 excellent pieces of advice for his 73rd birthday.
Doctor Who has returned and the new TARDIS team have found their feet in an immensely satisfying way, all culminating in the truly wonderful episode Rogue, written by actual London improv legend, Briony Redman.
The Staves released their new album, which includes a rare love song, that I find achingly beautiful, So Gracefully.
Inside No.9 also returned for it’s 9th (and final series). The last episode EVER is tonight and WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT. This year, I loved the escape room episode and the one filmed entirely on a doorbell camera. They’re also coming to the West End next year with Inside No.9: Stage/Fright.
Giant Days has finally been released in full - The Library Editions.
Spotlight
The Mighty Pirates is a love letter to 90s-era point and click adventure games. The show itself is interactive and will have a different guest improviser every night experiencing a world of pirates, plunder and chickens with a pulley in the middle.
I’ve been working on this show for the last month with a very talented cast and I’d really love to share it with you. As mentioned above, it’s a weird idea - part-improv show, part escape-room - where puzzles are created and improvised according to what items the audience bring with them.
So come along on any of these days (but especially the first one) and bring something interesting for us to build puzzles around. THANK YOU!
