#104 Hammer nails into the art

Loss. Yoko. Revolution. Cookies.

Issue #104 Hammer nails into the art

6th March 2024

Hello, everyone.

Or actually, hello some of you, as it seems like this newsletter has been inadvertently put on a spam list. My deliverability has dropped sharply in the last few weeks (and that includes my personal email as it comes from the same domain).

And I totally get the irony of saying this to you, dear reader, as you're reading this right now and therefore presumably the email is coming through to you with no problems.

But nevertheless, if you have a moment, please mark emails from this address as Not spam and encourage fellow improvisers and team mates to do likewise.

And if you're waiting for a personal email from me - check your junk folder.

Finally, if any of you know what steps I should be taking to improve this situation - I'd love to hear from you.

Who am I kidding? I always love to hear from you.

Rule of three

A black and white picture of the artist, Yoko Ono.

[Art] Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind
Went to this exhibition at the Tate Modern with improv super pal Katy Schutte last week. I have to say, I knew little about Yoko as an artist but I had a glorious time. What other exhibition lets you hammer nails into the art, draw round your own shadow or take your clothes off inside a bag? My favourite bit was this instruction from Yoko.

Stone Piece to Bob Morris. Find a stone that is your size or weight. Crack it until it becomes fine powder. Dispose it in the river. (a) Send small amount each to your friends. (b) Do not tell anybody what you did. Do not explain about the powder to friends you send. 1963 winter.

I think we should all do this.

A mad king looms over an adventuring party.

[Game] Let's! Revolution!
Love this. It's a modern update of the old Minesweeper game you used to get on all Windows 95 computers, but it adds loads of cute characters and fun abilities that change up the gameplay each time you make a run. High quality casual gaming at its best. Yes let's!

A tray of amazing cookies.

[Biscuits] Karl's Chocolate Brownie Cookies
Karl has been attending my Farnham improv classes since the very first one in 2022. It's been such a joy to watch him become the phenomenal improviser he is today. Recently, Karl fell whilst putting up a curtain rail and cracked some of his ribs. It sounds absolutely horrendous. We've really missed him in class, his absence has been felt by all of us, but yesterday he triumphantly returned and he brought homemade cookies. And, let me tell you, they were the best damn cookies I've eaten in all my 43 winters on this earth. Here is the recipe if you'd like to make them too. Thanks, Karl.

Spotlight

A blue and red photo of a woman and the title Tonight I am my Mother.

Still a couple of tickets left for the previously sold out From the Backline workshops with Liz Allen next week. Liz is an absolute powerhouse performer and teacher. If you're looking to become a better, more supportive player, then this is the workshop for you.

Thursday 14th March - 2 places left
Friday 15th March - 1 place left

Also, if you're in London, come see her solo show Tonight I am my Mother at Hoopla on Saturday 16th. I'll be supporting her as part of the opening act - The Hoopla Allstars - with various other teachers and house team players.

Longform thoughts

It’s not:

A laugh of derision
Something unkind
To be wielded as a weapon

This week I ask - what is the improv laugh?

Radio contact

A dog in a cravat against a spring background.

Unprompted, Radio's grooming service did a little spring photoshoot of him in a cravat. LOOK AT THE LITTLE GENTLEMAN!

PS - this is my two year anniversary, I've been sending this newsletter every week for two whole trips around the sun. Thank you so much for continuing to support me. I appreciate it more than I can articulate.

It's great you're highlighting Liz Allen's workshops that's not my neighbor and her solo show. She sounds like a fantastic performer and teacher.

The minimalist art style and colorful backgrounds of Stickman Hook create an engaging visual experience, allowing players to focus on movement and rhythm while still enjoying vibrant, stylish environments.
