Masha's Roulette #9: Crossover Time
Welcome to the ninth issue of my weekly random grab-bag of recommendations newsletter, where I will show you some things to read and some things to listen to, and my solemn promise that at least one item in here will be new and interesting to you.
Have you been on Twitter this week? Did you bear witness to the legendary #Reigensweep? The influx of incredible fanart inspired the theme for this week's recs: CROSSOVERS! I love crossovers. Love making all my favorite characters friends. Or bitter rivals in the battle to be crowned Tumblr's Greatest Sexyman.
First, Some Things to Listen To (Loosely interpreting the concept of a crossover)
Fanart by Sandflakedraws, linked above
Okay so the first thing I thought of was Miku in Enstars but the Enstars rendition of Tell Your World honestly kind of sucks so I will spare you all by not linking it here. I think collaborations are kind of like crossovers? I guess? I was very excited when Lanndo/Nuyuri, a producer I like, collaborated with Suis and Eve, two singers I like, to release Uchuu no Kisetsu. Uh... Odo by Ado felt like a crossover to me because I've never seen Deco*27, Giga and Teddyloid on the same song before. Ado is very impressive. Crossing over language barriers (ha! I worked the theme in!) I'd been listening to Daniel Kahn's English-from-Yiddish-from-Russian translations of Bulat Okudzhava's songs this week and they're really impressive translations. I found this one particularly interesting as the original song is very well-known in the post-Soviet sphere and I'd never heard it sound like this before.
Now, Some Crossover Things to Read
Friendship!!! is Magic by Afrai Fandom: Yuri!!! on Ice and Ouran High School Host Club, Pairing: background Victor Nikiforov/Yuuri Katsuki and Fujioka Haruhi/Suoh Tamaki but friendship-focused, 10.4k
Summary: Haruhi said to the stranger, "The food's good, isn't it? Have you tried the small quiches?"
She'd spoken English on the assumption that most people in the room would likely understand it, but when the man turned it became apparent that he was Japanese. Haruhi knew this because she recognised his face. It was the face of Japan's ace skater, Katsuki Yuuri.
"K-K-Katsuki Yuuri-senshu!" Haruhi clapped her hand over her mouth, feeling the blood rise to her face.
"Ah," said Katsuki. He was different off the ice. His spectacles reduced the impact of his eyes, and the shape of his face was somehow softer, less distinctive. "Do I know you?"
Yuuri makes a friend. Viktor hates it.
OP also wrote the very dark Good Omens fic I recommended all the way back in my first newsletter. Such range.
The Hills Are Alive by MirasolAbeille
Fandoms: Discworld and The Sound of Music, Pairing: Susan Sto Heli/Captain von Trapp, word count: 40.5k
Summary: Captain von Trapp and his children get rather more than they bargained for with the new governess.
Wild.
there are eyes on the road that'll do us in (rice water) by roxast
Fandom: Haikyuu!! and Fullmetal Alchemist, Pairing: Van Hohenheim & Kita Shinsuke, Rating: T Word count: 3k
Summary: Hohenheim blinks. Hands making purchase with his spectacles, he finds, once he’s slid the frames up to the bridge of his nose, that there is actually only one pair of eyes looking back at him, rather than thousands. These eyes still hold a great deal of intent in their pupils, but the irises are drawn gentle, not cruel. Hohenheim blinks a few times, starting to see things clearly. Things like overalls, green gardening gloves, a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off of his face as well as his neck during a long day in the field.
This is a farmer, who is being an awfully good sport about discovering a body at the edge of his rice paddy.
(or; in his travels across Amestris, Van Hohenheim meets a young farmer named Kita)
Paper Chase by copperbadge
Fandoms: BBC Sherlock and White Collar, Pairing: Elizabeth Burke/Peter Burke (background), Rating: T Word count:9k, Warning: Violence
Summary: One criminal consultant. One consulting detective. One serial killer. And one perhaps inadvisable bet...
untitled by Toby Fox
Fandoms: Mob Psycho 100 and Undertale. Pairing: Ambiguous. Word count: a screenshot.
Summary: Reigen lost the Tumblr Sexyman poll in the finals, but it was very close.
It's time to admit it: I am running out of ideas and thus need to solicit recommendations from the masses (you, dear reader.) Please send in recommendations using this lovely form I created (using the Rec Center's form as a model). Am taking recs for fics, articles, interesting long blog posts, anything you think would appeal to other readers of Masha's Roulette.
I'll be back next week with more things to listen to and read!
