Masha's Roulette #7
Welcome to the seventh issue of my weekly random grab-bag of recommendations newsletter, where I will show you some things to read and some things to listen to, and my solemn promise that at least one item in here will be new and interesting to you.
First, Some Things to Listen To
This week I listened to... Mikito-P's album from 2014, Good School Girl and also the Korol i Shut song "The Wizard's Doll" because it came up in conversation in a server I'm in and I was like wow I forgot how much I liked that. Korol i Shut (literally King and Jester) are very interesting because their whole Thing is fairytale-inspired narrative horror songs, but also they're very catchy? I enjoy them.
Also Reol and Nuyuri (both of whom I love!) released a remix of "No title", one of my favorite Reol songs! It is so good!!
Now, Some Things to Read
This week's theme is... chatfics/epistolary fics/generally non-prose-shaped fanfictions from a variety of different fandoms! Someone linked me to a MDZS orchestra group chat AU fic recently and I've been slowly reading that all week, but I'm not fully caught up yet and also do not know a single thing about the MXTX danmeis (this is a slight exaggeration, I've watched about 15 episodes of the MDZS donghua but I still had to google some of the character names in this fic) so I don't feel comfortable Fully Recommending it, but it is funny.
I love stories told through alternative means like fake social media posts, text messages, emails, stuff like that, so here's a few of my favorites that each do something different with the idea of an alternative format.
Two flints and a fire by klairevoyance
Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Pairing: Gen (background relationships), Rating: M Word count: officially 4.5k but might be longer due to formatting
Summary: "@rieganrants: ah yes group projects. the little known tenth circle of hell."
Emails, texting, and twitter fic. To quote my bookmark comment on it: I would die for technologically incompetent Dimitri and his large print phone.
Fortune_Lover_(TGS Beta)(SARU_rip)[T+Eng0.75_Sincere].zip by Leaty
Fandom: My Next Life as a Villainness: All Roads Lead to Doom!, Pairing: Gen, Rating: T Word count: 5k, Major Character Death warning
Summary: An American gamer shares her story of the time when, while looking to pirate a copy of her favorite otome game, Fortune Lover, she uncovered something darker than she ever could have imagined.
(Hamefura, written as a pastiche of an old video game creepypasta.)
Gave me chills, and I'm not easily scared by creepypasta! Also impressive CSS styling.
Man I Love Futakuchi by asynchrony
Fandom: Haikyuu!!, Pairing: Gen, Rating: T Word count: 1.2K
Summary: The second-gen captains (and Aone) find themselves on Reddit. It doesn't go well.
Tony is one of the funniest people alive. And also did some impressive CSS styling for this one.
#friendlyneighborhoodspiderpeople by pepperfield
Fandom: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Pairing: Gen, Rating: T Word count:5k
Summary: Anonymous asked: they're CLONES people. it's obviously clones jfc i hate this website
New York's started to notice that there might be more than just one Spider-Man in town.
Relle is also one of the funniest people alive and worked very hard on the styling for this.
The Magnus Institute vs the 21st Century: a series of emails and IMs by shinyopals Fandom: The Magnus Archives, Pairing: Martin Blackwood/Jonathan "Jon" Sims | The Archivist but mostly gen, Word count: 26.5k for the full series
What happens if the Magnus Institute gets a Data Protection Officer? What's it like to work in Tech Support? How are employee reviews conducted when your manager is Peter Lukas? This series does its best to answers these sorts of hard-hitting questions about office life at the Institute.
I thought it was funny when I read it.
If fanfiction is not doing it for you, this wrap-up of the Publishing Industry Trial is pretty funny and informative.
Feel free to email back with recommendations of your own!
I'll be back next week with more things to listen to and read!
