Masha's Roulette #12: Fancomics about Cartoons

newsletterheader.png

Welcome to the 12th issue of my weekly random grab-bag of recommendations newsletter, where I will show you some things to read and some things to listen to, and my solemn promise that at least one item in here will be new and interesting to you.

I was at a music festival thing all weekend! This has nothing to do with the recommendations theme this week, which is a bunch of digital comics about childhood nostalgia properties that left a lasting impression on me when I first saw them. Transformative work can do a lot.

First, Some Things to Listen To

I can't think of anything on theme besides cartoon theme songs which isn't interesting and most of the music I heard at the event is... not findable on the internet in any form, and if it is, I don't know what about it would appeal to people who don't already like that sort of thing. But it is properly fall now, so here is a song I listened to in my car driving back from the event about the season. It was really cold so I made my mom listen to this. Someone sent me this version of a Vocaloid classic that will haunt me for ever but is commendable for its commitment to the bit.

Now, Some Interesting Things To Read

Jon and Jon 2by Gale Galligan

Fandom: Garfield, 9 and 19 pages

Summary: The life of Jon Arbuckle, cartoonist. Really cute! Jon 2 made me cry.

*Doug Catches Up by Kori Michele and Pat L.

Fandom: Doug, 24 pages

Summary: Doug Catches Up is a fancomic that imagines a thoughtful future for Doug, Roger, and and the rest of the cartoon cast. Written and illustrated jointly by Kori Michele and Pat L.

In Doug Catches Up, Doug returns to Bluffington after two decades away from his hometown. He meets up with Roger, who is eager to tell him how things have changed for him, and for Doug's sense of perspective.

Kori's a friend but I read this before we knew each other! Wild.

Mr Boop) by Alec Robbins

Can also be read here

Fandom: Betty Boop

Summary: "new daily comic strip i invented about what it’s like being married to Betty Boop"

Alec Robbins won an Ignatz award for the print collection of this webcomic and I was shocked to learn he actually looks exactly like how he draws himself.

Please send in recommendations using this lovely form I created (using the Rec Center's form as a model). Am taking recs for fics, articles, interesting long blog posts, anything you think would appeal to other readers of Masha's Roulette. I need more recommendations! I did not get many of them!

I'll be back next week with more things to listen to and read!
