I'll put on my radical urbanist hat for a second and link to this cool Bike Lane Sweeper. The average bike lane in my midsized midwestern city is just some faded green paint on the side of the road, but even the newer protected bike lanes quickly fill with rocks and other debris. Worse, they tend to be too small for the city's street sweepers to access, so the problem is rarely addressed. I love this kind of DIY, citizen-led, initiative to local problems!

A few weeks ago I stumbled on this interesting article about the origins of solitary confinement. It borrowed from Philadelphia's Quaker traditions of using silence to commune with God and achieve redemption, but it seems like they did not fully understand (or care?) about the impact of extended isolation.
