I enjoyed this Fast Company essay arguing that most "metaverse" plays are failing because Silicon Valley doesn't understand fun. Instead of building compelling spaces to spend time in, they are focused on helping players monetize their time with NFTs.
On a related note, I wonder how much the disappearance of the "cool" factor of a lot of startups founded by twentysomethings is the joylessness that comes from optimizing a business for venture-scale returns over a period of 10-20 years. (Counterpoint: Elon seems to be having something resembling human fun at Twitter/X and it is decidedly not cool.)
