I've been listening to The Data Detective by Tim Harford, who is one of my favorite pop economics writers. There is a section toward the end where he talks about leading (and misleading) with data visualizations. One of the examples he uses is around an award-winning infographic called "Iraq's bloody toll" and an alternative visualization of the same data called "Iraq: Deaths on the decline." Here is a bit of commentary from the creator of the latter. His point is not that either visualization is explicitly right or wrong, but that framing matters.
