This week I stumbled on the Lumatone keyboard, a microtonal keyboard with hexagonal keys. Western music and instruments primarily use semitones, so you might have notes like C, C#, and D that are each a half-step apart. But with a microtonal keyboard, you can produce tones that are partway between C and C#.
Here’s an example of a piece played on the Lumatone that includes microtones. They definitely jump out at me as feeling “out of tune,” but I’m curious if I would ever acclimate.
