This Week in Coffee; Wednesday 12th of April

Happy Easter everyone - Spring is certainly here in the UK.

My latest project is repairing a Sage (Breville) Duo Temp with a knackered TRIAC that causes it to heat up even when it's switched off and only plugged in. The plan is to fix and service the machine, then vinyl wrap it in green and sell the machine on.

And now for the news.

Equipment

  • Launch of the Niche Duo

This actually happened last week but I somehow managed to miss it!

Niche has released their new, higher-price, flat burr grinder allowing them to move even further into the specialty coffee world and start to challenge those higher-end products on the market from people like Weber. I think the Duo will be a hard sell to the public because it's actually less versatile than the Zero because the burr sets are specialized for espresso or pour over.

But, I think we'll see more and more niches in cafe settings being used for specialty and guest roasts or as part of tastings and cuppings.

  • Aeroopress launch the flow control cap

I haven't had a chance to play with one of these but will order one this week to get a hands-on. They're a great idea at a price that allows for experimentation and risk-taking.

Obviously a pretty shameless rip-off of the Fellow Prisimo so I don't really understand how it can be 'patent pending'.
