This Week in Coffee; Wednesday 26th of April '23

It's been a big week with the London Coffee Festival (and the Helsinki Coffee Festival, I have been informed) with quite a bit of buzz and hubbub around.

Equipment

  • Weber is at it again, with a £380 WDT

Honestly lads, I'm gonna buy one and I know I shouldn't.

It's called "The Moonraker" and it's as effective as a £5 Amazon WDT, but it is probably 76 times cooler which makes sense of the price.

  • Breville (Sage) Dual Boiler Discontinued (via u/mstoiber)
  • Cropster release BrewBeacon - IoT device installed in commercial expresso machines to track stats

Maybe these are totally pointless for an actual cafe owner but I think they're cool. I've seen similar devices before but the BrewBeacon is promising to be easier to install and use.

Simply, the idea is that from a central office computer, you would be able to track shot consistency across multiple group heads, machines, and locations.

  • Ikawa launch the Pro100x aimed at commercial roasters
  • Smeg Announces Espresso Machine with built-in grinder for June

This is newsletter-only information. I've been posting these updates to Reddit and finding it very challenging to talk about upcoming products due to their strict, but understandable, rules.

Personally, I'm not going to hold my breath for the Smeg. I have a bad feeling it will be something else re-badged. Smeg please send me a unit to prove me wrong.

Industry

  • World of Coffee 2024 announced for May 1-4 in Busan, S Korea.

WBC, give me press tickets and flights to this and I will happily shill for you. If you want to know how much money it would cost for me to sell out - it's approximately the cost of Economy Plus tickets to South Korea.

  • UK government signs 2022 International Coffee Agreement
