This Week in Coffee
We’re back in full swing now after the winter break, with coffee prices coming down slowly and the competitor season being announced.
I continue to be impressed and humbled by the response I’ve got from people since launching this newsletter. I love comments and feedback so please always write in if I get something wrong or you have something to add.
At some point I may move to Substack to enable direct public comments as this platfrom doesn’t support that but don’t worry you’ll get plenty of notice.
Equipment
The Invicta is Rancilio trying to move further in the specialty coffee space with this newer machine. This launch follows their announcement of a new line of speciality machines imaginatively called err “Speciality”.
I originally thought this machine would be a competitor to the Black Eagle Maverik but was set right by users on Reddit. On further inspection, the main innovation here is the heat exchanger which will keep the group head, and thus brew, temperatures consistent throughout a shot. While I’m sure this innovation is welcome, the $11,000 price tag is steep.
Industry
Sprudgie have done a great job sorting through the coffee world and sieving out these fine gems, and each link on the page is it’s own rabbit hole.
Miscellaneous

I’ve been talking with friends and colleagues about where to go next with this newsletter and the response wasn’t what I expected. Overall, people seem to be most interested in YouTube and video content, and there’s a consensus that that’s the best way to reach the maximum number of people. I would always keep the newsletter going but I want try my hand at videos in the coming months.
The specific idea I’m most passionate about is exploring coffee culture globally. I don’t have ten years as a barista and I’m not the two thousand and something world latte art champion but I have drunk coffee all over the world.
The first country I’m going to start researching is Singapore. I’m not Singaporean but I have personal connections to the country through friends and family, I’ve visited many times and they have a special and unique coffee culture.
If you’re from Singapore or you live there, I’d love to speak with you. Drop me an email at willnash@me.com and let’s arrange to chat.
