MOON BULLETIN - you’re behind on your tree gazing quota!!
We’re moving into summer in the city, and it feels like it (even if it’s 55 outside right now). For me, I’m reminded of all the summer rhythms that come up as the days get longer and the air more humid. Summer in New York means farmers markets, volleyball in the park, outdoor yoga, dancing all day on a sunday, free movies and concerts (included some of these in the bulletin today!). Mostly, I’m just going to the park every day. I’ve been joking about instituting a “mandatory tree gaze” as a daily practice: finding a beautiful tree and laying under it watching the branches sway. I actually think this could solve some of our problems. There’s something so deeply true about the “touch grass” meme - and now is the season where we really feel it.

🌑 New Moon (Tue May 27). This New Moon, I’m going to go for a long walk through Prospect Park at night. It’s so rare to get moments of quiet darkness in the city, and with no light from the moon, it will probably be a bit scary. But it will also be a reminder that the stories we tell about new york (too big, too bright, too busy) are just that: stories. Here’s Donna Haraway: “It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories”
🌑 Applications due for Becoming Cyborg in Prospect Park: New Moon (Tue May 27 @ 11:59pm). Why become a cyborg? Because you already are one! Applications due Tuesday, but the application is really just a simple way for us to get your preferences and learn a bit more about you :). Free.
🌒 Sidewalk Study on Donna Haraway at Prospect Park: Waxing Crescent (Wed May 28 @ 7pm). Connor and I are leading this study on one of my favorite texts by Donna Haraway, Situated Knowledges. She is, as always, a bit cryptic in her meanings, which is why we’ll investigate it (and practice it!) together! Come to critique the aerial eye, think about new ways of seeing, and maybe find yourself with a different relationship to google maps. Free, RSVP for address.
🌒 Uncommon Sight opening at Stephen Friedman Gallery: Waxing Crescent (Thu May 29 @ 6pm). “Yang’s paintings invite us to consider the tricks our minds play on us and the individuality of perception, ever warping within an uneasy world.” Cool! Also, wine. Free.
🌒 In the Mood for Love screening at Fort Greene Park: Waxing Crescent (Thu May 29 @ 7pm). Every year I see a Wong Kar-Wai film in Fort Greene Park. This is a very nice tradition. Free.
