MOON BULLETIN - serendipity soup

At this point I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but I keep calling it my summer of serendipity. Mostly, I’m just outside a lot, in the neighborhood, running into friends at the park or the cafe or the bike lane. I’ve been attempting to remain open to possibilities, giving myself space to say yes to unexpected offerings. But it can be kind of difficult when I’m working most evenings, and when the threats of fascism and war loom even bigger on the horizon. How do we reconcile these different scales of experience? What’s the point in seeking out seemingly blithe values like serendipity, whimsy, or joy?

I keep thinking about the covid turn of phrase “unprecedented times,” which itself seemed to quickly become a meme. It feels, to me, like these times are entirely precedented. The troubles don’t wait; we reap what others sowed. And while said troubles are entirely serious, and dire, we can’t meet them with only gravitas. All variety of approaches are needed to assert our vitality in the face of fascism. One piece of hope: early voting numbers for the democratic primary are double what they were in 2021… especially among younger voters. Can’t say for certain how this will influence the election, but we can trust that this is a good sign that Cuomo might not win this election. Perhaps there will be something to celebrate as the New Moon arrives — if you can spare the time, take a moment to phone bank or canvass for Zohran (or your preferred non-Cuomo candidate). Four days left!
