MOON BULLETIN - feasting at the public library

I have some library books overdue. Somehow, I keep getting new ones — I just received a notification that I have a hold available, though I cannot for the life of me remember what book it was that I requested. This feels representative of the season, which for me is characterized by an unceasing mood of aspiration. All things feel possible when the temperature is in the 70s and the options for filling your time approach infinity. Should I attend the queer ecological outdoor movie screening? Or the sunset yoga with a view of the city? Or maybe the craft market raising funds for Palestine? Maybe, instead, I should just sit under a tree at Prospect Park and make a dent in my ever-growing to-read pile.

I’ve frequently found this pattern to be a source of friction. In continually adding to my plate, I add fuel to the anxiety fire, believing that I’m doomed to always be ruled by desire, never to be satisfied with what I have. But it doesn’t have to be this way. While living in New York can feel like an overbearing assault of the possible, it can also feel like a feast for your curiosity. What that means is that sometimes I get full; sometimes, I accept that the book isn’t going to be finished. But I can still be deeply impacted by a chapter or an excerpt, and a book or community or event or party or rave can always find me at a later time when I have more spaciousness to connect to it. I think there’s never too much reminding myself of this, so as I look ahead to an already-packed June season, I’m viewing it as a cornucopia of my choosing. I do, in fact, have the agency to make this a deliciously filling time. Let me aspiration be a source of joy, that I have such vibrant communities to nourish it, rather than a source of anxiety about the always-incomplete nature of my own living. I’ll lick the brownie batter off the spoon and remember that unfinished things can sometimes taste even sweeter.
