Weekly Recommendation: Wolken by Bukahara

Hey there!

Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's "Wolken" by Bukahara.

But first, a quick note from me:

Sorry I missed the last two newsletters. I'm hoping to get into more of a rhythm going forward... it's been a chaotic few weeks. I'm finishing up my masters and freelancing part-time for a startup so there's been a lot I'm juggling.

If you want to complain about (or perhaps, compliment) my recommendations, you can get in touch on Twitter @elisecutts or by shooting an email to hello@monoglotanxiety.com. You can also get in touch, support the blog, or send a one-time donation from the Buy Me A Coffee page.

With that out of the way, on to the recommendation...

"Wolken" by Bukahara

I discovered Bukahara this week, and they're is one of those German bands that I was incredibly disappointed to discover sings in English... until I got to the end of their album Canaries in a Coal Mine and was rewarded with music in ~gasp~ German! The group, which sings not only in English and German but also in Arabic, has a very unique sound that reflects—and goes beyond—the diverse backgrounds of Bukahara's members. "Balkan, Folk, Jazz, Oriental, Swing, Gypsy, Reggae, Arabic-Balkan-Sound, Singer-Songwriter - mit diesem wortreichen Spektrum versuchen Kritiken, Musikmagazine und Bukahara selbst die Musik einzuordnen,"* writes the Goethe Institute Frankreich in their "Band des Monats" (Band of the Month) piece about the group. You probably haven't heard too many groups that sound like Bukahara! Wolken is one of their German songs that I like best.

If you like English music, check out "Storytelling Animal," it's another one of my favorite songs by Bukahara.

*Translation: Balkan, Folk, Jazz, Oriental, Swing, Gypsy, Reggae, Arabic-Balkan Sound, Singer-Songwriter, with this wordy Spectrum, critics, music magazines, and Bukahara itself try to categorize the music.

Check out the song on Spotify! There's no official version on YouTube, but there is this rooftop performance.

That's all for this week,
