Weekly Recommendation: Bungalow by Bilderbuch

Hey there!

Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it’s “Bungalow” by Bilderbuch.

“Bungalow” by Bilderbuch

Popular not only in their native Austria but across Europe and the world, Bilderbuch is a boy band for the 21st century. The group’s sound has changed over the years, starting off more indie-rock inspired before picking up influences from art pop, hip hop, and R&B. “Bungalow, which came in 8th on the Austrian charts for 23 weeks running, is just pure fun. It’s impossible not dance along at least a little.

The music video is definitely worth a watch, if only for this little clip of lead singer Maurice Ernst with a cat. You can also find “Bungalow” on Spotify and iTunes.

A rare German-language international musical success

Like Falco before them, Bilderbuch is enjoying success beyond Austria despite singing in a language that most of their listeners can’t understand. In this interview, the lead singer indicated that he didn’t see why internationally popular music, especially within multilingual Europe, should be restricted to English lyrics and predicts that it’s just a “question of time” before language barriers in music start to come down. In any case, there really does seem to be something in the Viennese water — although Bilderbuch got its start in Upper Austria, they’re based in Vienna just like many other great German-language artists.

That’s all for this week. Until next Friday,

Elise
