PRISMATIC SLANT - ISSUE #9 - OVERWINTERING - DECEMBER 2021
12.07.21
Dear Readers,
There’s a dusting of snow on the ground and a bite in the air. I sit, bundled up from head to toe, out on the back porch, shielded by our big brick abode, which cuts the bitter wind significantly. Out here smoking my old man pipe. Winter has arrived. At least in my estimation and according to the almanac. This will be my second December returning to the southeast for the month.
Tomorrow I’ll be hopping on a plane to to South Carolina to help a dear friend move to Kentucky for their grad school program. My brain and body are preparing for the labor and subsequent relaxation involved. It will be a very quiet December after the rigors of the three-state trek. We’re planning to hole up, cook good meals, read books, take long hikes and ground ourselves and our intentions for the year to come, including being off Social for the rest of the month to clear my head.
It does feel strange to leave Detroit for the final month of the year; this place has become my steadfast home. I’m excited to experience new terrain and fall in love with Appalachia in a new and different way. It’s a returning to one’s roots in a particular form, but I do feel a bit like an invasive. More on that later.
The layout of this issue is more contained due to creating this while traveling and having no second monitor. As promised, it's definitely word heavy. 30 pages of essays, reviews, wandery adventures, photos, plant things and affection for mah friends.
