MAZON & MISCHIEF

This month we had the honor of collaborating with MAZON: A Jewish Response To Hunger for their playful take on a virtual gala to launch their one-of-a-kind virtual museum. We were joined by beloved Escape From Godot alumni Lisa Bierman, Mark Gagliardi, Phil Ward and Silvie Zamora, as well as two new Mister & Mischief collaborators, the hilarious musical geniuses Marnina Schon and Michael O’Konis of Couplet.

We were delighted that such an esteemed organization was eager to find the fun in service of their mission to end hunger for people of all faiths and backgrounds.

2022 HIGHLIGHTS

We were delighted to be recommended in the No Proscenium 2022 Gift Guide, and then almost passed out when we were named one of the best immersive experiences of 2022.

Inspired to share that feeling, here are our TOP 10 IMMERSIVE MOMENTS OF 2022.

Please check out and support these other fabulous folks making weird magic!

  • Falling under the musical spell of Aria in Campfire Tales (Los Angeles, CA) -- Campfire Tales offered an impressive array of beautiful ghost stories as flames danced on Dockweiler Beach. In particular, Esty Bharier's haunting biographical ballad of a forgotten folk singer was performed with such seamless earnestness, it lodged itself in our brains and simply refuses to leave. Our fingers and toes are crossed that this very special show returns next spooky season.

  • Watching Rey, Saja Mercer, and a bunch of kids hatch a plan at the Galactic Starcruiser. (Orlando, FL) -- We know the Halcyon can jump to hyperspace, we know guests can wield a lightsaber, but witnessing these moments of unexpected and intimate storytelling were Andy’s favorite part of working on this immersive behemoth of a show.

  • Exploring the market in Zotto, shadowed by a Kappa. (Denver, CO) -- When you get to the market in Zotto, you've been walking through the story of this family, and the market is exactly as it has been described, but the artistic flourishes of pen and ink bring the theme, the narrative, and the immersion together beautifully. This was a highlight of Jeff’s trip to the Denver Immersive Gathering that Andy is incredibly jealous that she missed.

  • It’s a (very judgy) family affair at Imagine'er-Do-Wells (Los Angeles, CA) -- This monthly creative club has become a hilarious event where anyone and everyone gets to try their hand at dreaming up an insane attraction and pitching it to the judges and roomful of (mildly intoxicated) peers. We had the absolute pleasure of judging the November competition as a family, and even Andy’s mom got in on the act, pitching her Thanksgiving Escape Room/ Honesty Ice Breaking Challenge, “Franksgiving.”

  • Sneaking a little bite of Animal Cracker Conspiracy (San Diego, CA) -- We spent two days setting up our show at La Jolla Playhouse's Without Walls festival in April, and as we took a break and walked into the sunshine of the plaza, we caught a rehearsal of the Animal Cracker Conspiracy's puppet promenade and it just made us smile brightly at the creativity of this community. We’re smiling now just thinking about it.

  • Discovering tomb sweet tomb at the Rosicrucian Museum (San Jose, CA) -- Who knew that one of the most powerful, charming, and legitimately educational performances of the year would be a tomb tour in a small museum founded by the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis? Certainly not immersive creator and collaborator David Ruzicka and Andy, who stumbled upon it almost by accident and haven’t shut up about it since.

  • Splitting up at the Ministry of Peculiarities (Azusa, CA) -- We loved puzzling through the twists and turns at Hope End, even (especially) when we were encouraged to split up our team and take different paths through the mystery. It was as wonderful as everyone said it was and most definitely worth the trip.

  • Enjoying the concrete fairy-tales and Magic Keys at Children's Fairyland (Oakland, CA) -- An oasis for families, this independent attraction is a welcome delight offering some whimsical fairy-tale balance to most frenetic modern attractions. From picnicking under Anansi’s web to sliding down a dragon’s tail, our inner children and our actual child had a blast.

  • Pulling strings with Tree and Squirrel (Minneapolis, MN and Los Angeles, CA) -- The interactive and wordless magic of two autumnal pals at Cedar Fair’s Tricks & Treats was a stark contrast to the spectacle and bone-rattling coasters of a giant theme park.  Andy was thrilled to partner with the team at Bob Baker Marionette Theatre and Chamindika Wanduragala of Monkeybear. Finally seeing Squirrel and Tree greet each other in Everfall was better than all the acorns put together.

  • Reveling in multi-generational eureka moments at Trivium Escapes' Ghost Patrol  (Emeryville, CA) -- Keeping things accessible for kids but still spooky for adults is no easy task, but Ghost Patrol scales for all ages brilliantly.  Helping the friendly ghosts at Trivium Escapes gave all in our party, young and old, genuine moments to be the hero and help crack the case. We can’t wait to go back and see what they concoct next.
