Why Wintering?

an explanation for my love of this book

Well hello there, happy Tuesday!

NOTE: Today’s missive is the first of five Tuesday newsletters devoted to a book near and dear to my heart: Wintering by Katherine May.

I am always fascinated by how some books hit a specific reader SO hard, and leave others totally flat. We all bring a particular lens to any given book, but the time and circumstances surrounding the reading experience can make such a massive difference in whether or not a book becomes a heartprint book for any reader.

I mark something new every time I read it

This is especially true for a book like Wintering, a memoir that touches on both the natural season of winter and those difficult times of our lives that May refers to as winters.

If you don’t experience natural winters in your environment, this book might not hit that hard. If you’re not sensitive to daylight changes, this probably won’t be relatable. If you have been blessed with no major hardships in life, you may not have much to grab onto here. If you bounce back quickly from adversity, this may seem overdramatic.

For me, though, Wintering was the exact right book that released at the exact time I needed it the most. November 2020.
