Five Things to Tell You Vol. 32

Five(ish) of my very favorite newsletters

Well, hello there! So happy to see you today!

Friends, I got back from my family shenanigans in Northern Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon and left again Tuesday morning for my Lake Michigan adventures, arriving home again maybe today? Yes, I got laundry done in between, but that’s about it. The car was still full of Lake Superior sand when we headed out for Lake Michigan … sign of a truly Great summer, right? Great Lakes jokes, I got ‘em.

Remember my motto: summer is for FUN AND ADVENTURES! AND A VERY MESSY HOUSE AND CAR. And yes I scheduled this missive before I left because no laptops allowed in the campsite (per me)!

Today’s edition of Five Things is THEMED again, and I am bringing to you five of the newsletters that I open every. single. time. they. arrive. in. my. inbox. I know I have linked to these numerous times in the past, but I tell you time and time again that I unapologetically love what I love, and I’ll never be quiet about it.

Of course there are other newsletters I read consistently, but on Saturdays I share FIVE THINGS, so that’s all I can share. It’s a RULE! Also, if you know of more non-Substack publications, please do send them my way!

Go on and grab a tasty treat, prepare yourself to fill your newsletter inbox, and let’s dive in …

Ann Friedman

Ann Friedman's newsletter homepage

Ann Friedman’s newsletter is the super-way-cooler older sister to what I want mine to be when it grows up someday. Concise, smart, original, stand-alone, absolutely 100% reliable. She’s my hero.

Catherine Newman

Catherine Newman is one of my favorite authors, and her always-a-welcome-surprise-whenever-it-arrives monthly-ish newsletter Crone Sandwich is a favorite dose of quirkiness, rambling, heart, life, recipes and the eternal hope that there will be yet another book coming. That’s how I found out about Wreck!

Kuleigh Baker

Kuleigh Baker writes an absolutely delightful slice-of-life newsletter titled The Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. at her Substack, overbooked mama. It’s cozy and relatable and just a quick weekly glimpse into her life and various recommendations (always including books!), and it never fails to make me smile.

Michelle Martin

Michelle Martin is one of my longtime favorites, and her newsletter Literary Leanings is such an aesthetic feast; understandable once you learn she is not only an avid reader, but a photographer. Her Portland, Maine missives make me ache to visit the state again, and her book recommendations always help me find titles I haven’t seen anywhere else.

Alyssa Morris

Alyssa Morris is my absolute go-to source for trends in the romance industry, with her newsletter Romancing the Phone focusing on what the actual hell is happening in the romance BookTok world in any given week or related to any given trend. Given that I don’t use TikTok, Alyssa’s analysis and insights help me understand what my students are seeing online, and what’s going on in one of my favorite book genres.

Okay, wait, ONE MORE: ALL MY LOVE for my newsletter friend and favorite Nina @ The Seasonalist! That rule of five things was made by ME and I can break it.

I feel like I link to Nina a lot, but can’t leave her off this list. I assure you that you need The Seasonalist in your inbox and life: maybe then you too will come back from watching a certain movie and sit down and compose a book of a comment to one of her HOT TAKES about that movie knowing that she’ll read it and respond, because seriously, Nina is the hilarious inbox friend you all DESERVE. She really covers it all - food, books, life, movies, music, and of course, how to live seasonally.

Which of these newsletters do you already read or are you most excited to add to your inbox? I’d love to hear!

Hello friend! Thanks for the shoutout! I took last week off because of the holiday and floods, and now I'm in California. It was a crazy week, and I just peeked at my email and was like "why do I have so many subscribers? " Thanks friend! :o) Love it. And have fun in Michigan. I'll be popping back on this week. Back to business tomorrow.

:o)

I hope the California visit is going well - I've been thinking of you and the floods and hoping your home area was spared!
