I'm drowning too

I know that my Saturday newsletters may seem too cheery in this time of horror and terror and flames and hate. I know. And wrestle with it constantly.
But. But they’re one of my absolute bright spots ~ getting to write about things I love, that make me happy, that offer a diversion from billionaires and ICE and terror and despicable hate.
Therefore, this is my official statement that I’m never NOT thinking about the state of our world. I don’t have blinders on.
I am getting emails all day at work about how to deal with ICE agents showing up at my school. My students’ parents / cousins / brothers getting shot over the weekend because guns. How to deal with my BLATANTLY DEI SIGNAGE EVERYWHERE IN MY LIBRARY- IT IS THE HILL MY CAREER WILL DIE ONE should it become an issue.
Friends and family texting about possible horrific changes to insurance coverage. News about acquaintances’ coworkers getting layoff notices because they attended a DEI training. Book bans and book bans and book bans.
Fires. Fires. Fires.
Environment. Water. Oil. Birds.
Terrorists pardoned.
The news. The news. The news. The news. Despite my attempts to limit my constant exposure, everyone sees it, everyone reads it, it shows up everywhere. Even if I tried not to see it, people bring it to me.
My money is flowing out to organizations and impartial news sources trying to be the tiny bandage that just fixes things oh my god. But there’s never enough. Never. Enough.
It’s not that I’m not paying attention. I’m drowning in it.
But friends, sometimes there also has to be a little bit of light, and that is what my Saturday newsletters are intended to be. And will continue to be as long as I can manage to hold my head up.
If these are not the mode your brain needs to be in right now, I totally understand. Please return when you are able. But if you too need a cozy, contemplative place to land, I hope that my Five Things to Tell You newsletters on Saturdays are that place for you. And know that I’m just trying to survive. Like you.
See you tomorrow morning.
XO,
Katy
Thanks for stopping by!
