Staying Consistent During Tough Times
How to show up in hard times.
We build a steady rhythm and settle into it, but then a life-changing event hits, and our entire routine shatters. We feel like we are failing because we can’t keep up with our habitual rhythm.
These moments can be a great opportunity to evaluate our commitment to consistency more precisely.
Forcing our old routine in such difficult times is actually intensity in disguise, and it’s a direct path to burnout.
True consistency in a crisis starts with self-compassion: by acknowledging our new reality, and accepting that our old routine is impractical right now.
Our direction can still remain our constant guide. Our old routine might be gone, but our direction ("I create," "I write", “I learn”, “I grow”) can still hold true.
Our daily "win" is all that needs to change: The new "win" could simply be opening the notepad and writing two sentences instead of our usual two pages, or studying and learning for twenty minutes instead of our usual two hours.
These tiny steps keep us connected to our process even in harsh times. They allow us to rework our way back to our full routine without crashing out or plunging into self-criticism.
What's one small way you can stay true to your direction when your normal routine feels impossible?
Consistently,
