Friction Is Fuel

Don't try to smooth everything out

We spend a lot of energy trying to remove friction from our lives. We want a smooth morning, a seamless workflow, and a day without interruptions. We believe that if we can just eliminate the bumps, we will finally be effective.

But a frictionless life is impossible.

Delays happen. Energy levels dip. Unexpected tasks appear. So do exciting new opportunities. When our only strategy is to avoid unexpected events, we are constantly frustrated.

What if we stopped trying to eliminate friction and started using it?

Think of a sailboat. It moves because of how it uses the flow of water and wind, not because it opposes them. Without resistance, it would just drift.

When we accept friction as a necessary part of the process, our approach shifts:

  • We Stop Fighting Reality: Instead of getting angry that a task is hard or a day is messy, we accept it as the current condition. This saves enormous amounts of mental energy.
  • We Build Traction: Just as tires need friction to grip the road, we need challenges to gain traction. The difficulty of our work is actually what helps us learn and adapt.
  • We Find a Truer Flow: Flow is about navigating our difficulties with skill, and not just keeping things smooth. It is the ability to keep moving with the resistance, not just waiting for all our adversities to disappear.

Where are you fighting against friction today? What would happen if you worked with it instead?

With traction,
