The Kraken and the Deep

Did you miss us, ?

We missed you.

Kelly Sue DeConnick

Emma Ríos, my friend, my hero and partner on Pretty Deadly has a nickname for me -- she calls me "Sister Kraken" for my unfortunate tendency to retreat into the dark for days (or sometimes weeks) at a time. This last... what? Six weeks or so? have felt like that. Time in the dark. I feel myself drifting toward the surface again now.

Hello. I've missed you. I'm sure I've brought you things from the deep, but I'm not sure what they are or where I've hidden them just yet.

A couple of bullet points before my rambling turns into more than you want to read:

  • Ghost 4 is out today. My farewell to the series, this issue is a stand-alone one-shot and one of my favorite things I've ever written. I'll miss Elisa, but this feels like a parting gift and a satisfying way to say goodbye.

  • Speaking of good byes, Avengers Assemble: The Forgeries of Jealousy is out in trade paperback now. Four of the five issues were co-written with Warren Ellis (!!) and the book features Spider-Girl in a series of Avengers Mentoring Team Ups. Any similarities between book dialogue and actual conversations between Ellis and I is purely coincidental.

  • From good byes to hellos: Bitch Planet #1 is slated for November. Cross your fingers. Had a long planning meeting with Danielle Henderson (editor) and Laurenn McCubbin (design consultant) last weekend. We're off to the proverbial races.

  • I'm going to Dragon*Con in August. Never been before. I want to see ALL DA COSPLAY.

  • If you're a professional in the comic book industry, you have until June 13th to cast your Eisner ballot.

  • Finally got started on my astronaut sleeve with tattoo artist Ryan Mason of Scapegoat Tattoo here in Portland. The butterflies are Eastern Tiger Swallowtails -- Alice's butterflies from Pretty Deadly.

  • And speaking of, Pretty Deadly is in it's second week on the New York Times Best Sellers list and we're going to have to go back to print. Woo hoo! Eisner noms, best seller... Not bad for the worst comic book ever written, huh? (If you don't know what I'm referring to, that's for the best. I'm showing my ass, frankly. I'm human.)

Matt Fraction

Hi everybody!

SEX CRIMINALS V1: ONE WEIRD TRICK is out in trade and is available now everywhere. It launched at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list. I would like to thank literally every single person that bought it and joined Chip and I in our game of sexy sexy chicken. We are all winners. The book is almost through it’s first printing and we’re rushing to a massive second printing. Hopefully there will be no gaps in availability.

SEX CRIMINALS #6, the start of the second storyline, is at the printer now. It will be available 6/18.

Chip and I will have copies of that, and the EXCLUSIVE CONVENTION-ONLY HARDCOVER at HEROESCON this JUNE 20-22. Also, a few amazing, beautiful, and entirely tasteful PRINTS will be on-hand.

We’ll have some other goodies, too. SECRET GOODIES.

You’ve been to www.brimper.com, right?

Oh hey! Chip was nominated for a Shuster Award this morning in the category of Artist/Dessinateur. That’s french for “brimper.” CONGRATS CHUBBST SADORKKSI FOR YOUR NOMINATION AS BEST CANADIAN.

SATELLITE SAM #9 is off to print THIS week, putting it on stands… oh, probably July 2, were I to guess. Thanks to all the retailers that participated in the Tijuana BIble incentive last issue. If you didn’t get a copy, I’ll have ‘em at HEROESCON. It’ll be reprinted in the second trade which is out… August or September. Probably September; our schedule slipped a little bit. Anyway, it was an honor, privilege, and thrill, to produce actual, real, true, non-redeemable, wholly-deplorable and nearly-subliterate pornography with my hero, Howard V. Chaykin.

I got pages from both David and Annie on HAWKGUY this week.

I wrote a thing I can’t talk about and it’s driving me CRAZY that I can’t talk about it. Probably closer to the fall, I guess.

CASANOVA v4: ACEDIA #1 is drawn and the palette has been set. Fábio will be starting issue 2 very soon.

ODY-C gets underway, finally, later this summer. I don’t know how much longer I can resist just dropping everything else and getting into it.

And more stuff, too. Aye-yi-yi. If things seem quiet it’s only because there is so so much to get done.
