Just the Tips

OOOOOH, ! OOOH!

Oooh.

- matt fraction -

I’ve been using my twitter and tumblr to pretty much curate and recirculate news out of Ferguson, MO, which I find horrifying, terrifying, and absolutely vital to keep recirculating. Every day people write me and say they had no idea until they read my site or feed -- so, y’know. I dunno what good having a microphone that talks to 70-thousand people is, between my twitter and tumblr, but this seems as good a use as dick jokes and old pulp magazine covers, which tends to be my usual stock in trade, so.

oh! I'm training for a half-marathon. so there's that, in my feed, too. i've never, uh -- i don't do that. i don't know what i'm doing. i have an app. and a deadline. it's an AVENGERS marathon at Disneyland. I'll be representing #teamHAWKGUY. I'm trying to tweet about it to keep myself honest? I don't know. I'm terrified and exhausted and hungry all the time.

On Sunday night I ran for two hours and then ate three turkey protein bars wrapped in tortillas, slept for six hours, woke up, ate three bowls of serial, then slept for four more hours, woke up, ate half a pizza, and went back to sleep.

So i'm saying i'm pretty much gonna die soon.

• HAWKEYE 20 -- I got the numbering wrong last week, thanks Steve Wacker -- the last Kate-in-L.A. issue, the last Annie Wu issue, called “The Longish Goodbye,” went to press last week. It hits shops on SEPTEMBER 10th. Here is a panel I screencapped from the screen-res PDF:

• Howard’s almost wrapped SATELLITE SAM #10, which brings the second chapter/arc/whateverthehell to a close. Here’s a look:

It took me ten issues but I finally got to Jack and Charlie’s 21 Club. There’s also an exegesis on the engineering of a woman’s stocking that pushed, I suspect, even the limits of Howard’s fetishization. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Figure this for late September.

Meanwhile, in Casanova country, even Kaito’s into brimping:

Also, Kaito’s alive still.

And in November, there’s THIS:

Bah. I'm buried. Just a bit from me this week --

Brian Bendis' birthday party was Sunday. Alisa threw him an amazing bash, complete with Scavenger Hunt in downtown Portland. I got Brian and Alisa's permission to auction off our set of favors (personalized messenger bag, tshirts, boxer shorts and more) for a charity auction. Girls Leadership Institute is usually my charity of choice, but in this case I'd like the money to go to one of the legal funds for those arrested in Ferguson, MO. So I'll get details together for that and let you all know as soon as it's ready.

It looks like Captain Marvel 8 is out in October and CM9 is out in November. Here's the solicit for 9:

CAPTAIN MARVEL #9
KELLY SUE DECONNICK (W)
DAVID LOPEZ (A/C)
• Face front, Carol Corps after the adventures with the Flerkin, Carol’s got her hands full again – this time with a special guest star from the X-Universe: the Marvel Universe’s rock and roll maven, Lila Cheney!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

For whatever reason, 9 is my favorite number and Issue 9s are always my favorite issues. This is shaping up to be no exception.

Work is continuing apace on PROMETHEUS, BITCH PLANET, PRETTY DEADLY VOLUME 2 and a couple of non-comics gigs. Just take my word for it. Details as I have time.

This week's homework:

Let's think about editing. Watch a scene from a show or film. The shorter the better; we all have lives to live, right? Okay so watch a scene. Then watch it again. Watch it and pause at every edit. Write down what each shot in the scene is -- what it shows, where it moves (if it moves), where the cuts come (if they come). Ask yourself why -- how does the scene progress with the cuts, how would it progress without the cut. What visual information are you given that you need? What audio information? Could you get the same stuff from the scene with your eyes or ears closed?

Now try it with a comic.

#ICYMI

  • MF: My reading has moved into fiction for the first time in forever. I’m going through the Matthew Scudder novels (up to OUT ON THE CUTTING EDGE now) and chasing it with either BRAVO, Rucka’s new Jad Bell book, or, as of last night, ONE KICK, by Chelsea Cain, which got a tremendous write-up in the Sunday times. She’s the best. So, uh. So go read that stuff.

  • MF: Oh, and -- did you hear Jules Feiffer made a noir graphic novel? Called KILL MY MOTHER? Because he did, and, holy shit, it sounds amazing: http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/jules-feiffers-kill-my-mother, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/17/books/review/jules-feiffers-kill-my-mother.html, Get on that, comics internet. It’s only Jules-gotdang-Feiffer. EEESH.

  • MF: I got to talk to one of my favorite shows BULLSEYE (With Jesse Thorn) for their “I Wish I Made That” segment. I talked about ENTER THE DRAGON. Not only is BULLSEYE fantastic, but Jesse’s behind PUT THIS ON, “the web series about dressing like a grown-up,” instrumental and indispensable if you, like me, have decided that you like to look like you know what time it is without needing to look at a watch. I don’t quite have Jesse’s sartorial flair but, hey, it’s good to have aspirations. I also couldn't remember the word "cathexis" the whole time. See if you can tell. because i was trying to remember the word "cathexis."
