Happy Belated Pig Day!

Did you know this was a thing? It's a thing.

Hello again, friends!

First: Yesterday was National Pig Day. Obscure designations almost always delight me but this one packed an extra something special. I feel like I have 51 years of uncelebrated Pig Days to catch up on. Maybe I should find 51 miniature pig instagram accounts to follow.

Adventureman Issue 8 is out today! Matt Fraction, the Dodsons and Clayton Cowles. Check out a preview at the link. How joyful is this cover??

Did you see the announcement from Uncle Brian? Click through for more details on that too, but the tl;dr is that Abrams is putting out a new graphic novel series from Brian Bendis and André Lima Araújo called

PHENOMENA: THE GOLDEN CITY OF EYES

I got a chance to see an early proof of the book—it’s so beautiful. No joke, I even had a spread as my desktop wallpaper for ages.

Speaking of my desktop wallpaper (you’re RIVETED, I’m sure) I’m currently using the unlettered version of the six-goddess spread from Historia Book One. I wonder if there’s a place on the DC site where you can download thing like wallpapers of your favorite books/characters? If there isn’t, seems like there should be.

Historia Book 2 with Gene Ha goes to the printer any minute now. On sale date is April 5th. The FOC date (that’s “final order cut off” — the date that retailers have to have their numbers in to distributors) DC Editorial and I had for the book was March 6th, and to that end I scheduled a couple of podcast interviews, both of which dropped yesterday. Right before FOC! Look at me being all deliberate.

…Except that retailers informed me the FOC they had on their books was February 27th? Not sure what happened there. Womp womp.

Regardless, if you plan to pick up the book (and I hope you do), you should still let your retailer know. If you need help finding a local retailer or a mail order option, hit me up. (Short version — check https://www.comicshoplocator.com/ )

[In the time since I started writing this I somehow managed to start having lower back spasms severe enough that I had to lay down on the floor in the kitchen. Not long after—hilariously while I was on a call with an Executive Function Coach—our just-cleaned roof gutters overflowed, resulting in water coming into the house in two places. Not feeling awesome about today. Hope yours is going better.]

I need to update you on #VisibleWomen, and I’d like to update you on a few other things, but I need to unplug the heating pad and go see if I can help with the gutters. So more later, I guess?

Actually, no, let me just add a little bit here quickly —

#VisibleWomen

  • Thanks to the folks who have already volunteered to help. I’m going to send out an email to volunteers soon, if you’d like to be added to that list, send us an email address through http://www.milkfed.us/contact. In particular I’m looking for folks to help gather some images, folks with experience formatting things for the web and folks with experience working with Wix. Oh, someone with some light video editing skills would be handy as well.

  • Next #VisibleWomen event is March 28th.

  • If you’d like to be added to the informational text list, text #VisibleWomen to +1 (503) 738-1029. (Texting “Milkfed” to the same number will get you on the comics update list and “BGSD” will get you on the Bitches Get Shit Done community… which, I should specify, is also open to non-bitches.) You can also just text me at that number if you choose.

  • I am also collecting questions for the #VisibleWomen project — questions about the craft and questions about the industry. If you’ve got some, you can reply here or send them through http://www.milkfed.us/contact. Here are a couple of samples:

    • Craft: Most scene changes are done on a page turn. Is there a way to do them effectively mid-page?

    • Craft: What are the rookie mistakes you see comic artists make most often? Same question for writers.

    • Craft: If we want a masterclass in superhero comics fight scenes, which artists should we study?

    • Industry: Is there anything we should be learning from the success of manga?

    • Industry: What’s the easiest comics discipline to break into?

    • Industry: What’s a “bake off”?

More soon,

Kelly Sue
