"Cryptic Like a Fable"

I gave Henry Leo Historia 1 to read, and this is how he described the opening narration. Is it weird to use a pull quote from your kid??

So much I want to catch you all up on, but I’ve got three scripts and some revisions on my desk, so I really need to get back to work. Until next time, mostly comic stuff follows, along with a little bit of local news and, as always, a treat at the end.

You can reply to anything in the comments below, or feel free to text me at (503) 738-1029.

  1. COMICS. Have you pre-ordered HISTORIA #1 yet? First issue is 64 pages of jaw-dropping art by Phil Jimenez. Seriously. EVERY PAGE. (Witness Menalippe, Queen of the Amazon Tribe of Hecate, below. She is literally one-THIRTIETH of that spread. EVERY AMAZON is rendered with that much love and detail.)
You can pre-order a signed copy from Books with Pictures Eugene here: http://tiny.cc/wwhistoria or you can pre-order from your local comic shop!

  2. COMICS. Adventureman #5 just came out and Adventureman #6 is out in two weeks! If you’re not reading this book yet, here’s your short pitch: a mother and her son learn that their favorite pulp hero was real when Mom inherits his mantle, his legacy… and his enemies. It’s very, very good. And literally fun for the whole family! By Matt Fraction, Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson.

  3. COMICS and FEEDBACK. I need to figure out something special to do for the first #WWHistoria cosplayer we see. I’m open to suggestions.

  4. COMICS and TV. Mark your calendars.

  5. COMICS and BOOKS. Penguin Classics to collaborate with Marvel!!
Ben Saunders, editor of the series, says, “The comics produced at Marvel in the 1960s can be compared to the most enduring popular music of that same tumultuous decade.  Working at tremendous speed in what was widely regarded as a low-status commercial medium, the creators at Marvel initiated and participated in an aesthetic revolution. These comics have now influenced writers and artists across all forms of media — from contemporary novelists to hip hop musicians to Hollywood filmmakers.  It is not hyperbole but simply a fact: these classic Marvel Comics are foundational documents of our culture.”
Ben is a good friend of ours and we could not be more excited to see what he’s done.

  6. COMICS and BOOKS and PDX. I’ll be chatting with Douglas Wolk about his new book ALL THE MARVELS at the Portland Book Festival on Saturday, November 13th. The book just came out day before yesterday, so if you pick it up soon, you’re on trend. (Seriously, it’s a great book for both Marvel-lovers and the Marvel-curious. HOLIDAY SHOPPING ALERT.)

  7. COMICS and FRIENDS. Turner wrote this up for me, but it’s all true so just pretend I said it: “NEWBURN is the new ongoing comics series from Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips. It’s about a private detective who works on retainer for New York City’s most notorious crime families to solve crimes and keep the balance between the competing organizations. It’s a procedural story and each issue is a one-and-done (which means each issue is also a jumping on point!). Also IT’S REALLY GOOD. Issue #1 hits stands November 3 from Image Comics, and you can learn more about it here.”

  8. COMICS and FRIENDS. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips alert! DESTROY ALL MONSTERS Hardcover! This story of hard-boiled crime (!!) and Hollywood real estate (?!) takes place in 1988 — the year I graduated high school. That’s retro now I guess.

…I need a minute and some deep breathing exercises.

  9. COMICS and KICKSTARTER. (Do y’all know our thing about wolves? That’s really all there is to it: we—our family—has a thing about wolves. We call our house “Wolfhouse.” There. That’s it. You’re completely filled in now.) Anyway, here’s a comic kickstarter for a book that hits all my wolf buttons. They’re only halfway to goal, and I’d like to see this funded.

  10. GOOD NEWS: New treatment destroys head and neck cancer tumours in trial; WHO recommends groundbreaking malaria vaccine for children at risk.

  11. PDX and MUSIC. Bodecker Foundation workshop registration is open. (The producer’s workshop with Chris Funk looks amazing.)

  12. COMICS and OREGON. The Art of the News: Comics Journalism opens at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in the Fall of 2021. (Our aforementioned friend Ben Saunders also helped curate this show!)

  13. COMICS and TATTOOS. I always try to stick to about a dozen items and then throw in something fun as the end as a thank you for reading this far.

Today’s bonus: I just stumbled upon this comic-focused tattoo artist out of Montreal and my mind is blown* —

    * I don’t know this person. He might be a delight; he might be a dick. This is not a personal recommendation, just an oohing and awwing at the comics love and the intense color.
