Canada demands 5% of revenue from Netflix, Spotify, and other streamers
"Based on the public record, the CRTC is requiring online streaming services to contribute 5 percent of their Canadian revenues to support the Canadian broadcasting system. These obligations will start in the 2024â2025 broadcast year and will provide an estimated $200 million per year in new funding," the regulator said.
The fees apply to both video and music streaming services. The CRTC imposed the rules despite opposition from Amazon, Apple, Disney, Google, Netflix, Paramount, and Spotify.
The new fees are scheduled to take effect in September and apply to online streaming services that make at least $25 million a year in Canada. The regulations exclude revenue from audiobooks, podcasts, video game services, and user-generated content. The exclusion of revenue from user-generated content is a win for Google's YouTube.
Richard Linklater on Sex, Murder, Hit Man, and the Infantilization of Culture

Now, I think [Laughs] the message societyâs sending is, âJust stay a 13-year-old forever.â Maybe a 12-year-old. When I was a kid we were neglected. They didnât make movies for us. You watch whateverâs out there and good luck. Every now and then there was a kidâs movie, but the whole culture wasnât bending to kidsâany more than the parents were bending to kids. They had an ad at 10 oâclock: âItâs 10 oâclock. Do you know where your kids are?â [Laughs] That was a real thing all over our country because, âOh, yeah. The kids. I donât know where they are.â So they didnât care. They didnât cater to kids. Now itâs all about the kids. Weâre going to overprotect them, and weâre going to make movies. Weâre just going to reduce the entire culture conversation and mentality to their level. And guess what? You donât have to grow up, either. Just stay a kid forever. Play with toys. Read comic books. Never mature. Donât even have sex while youâre at it. And good luck.

The top 100 private landowners have property in 39 states for any number of purposesâinvestment, conservation, tax benefits or just the bragging rights that come with owning big pieces of America. This map shows approximately 35 million acres of their holdings, or 87% of the total, across 31 states, based on a Bloomberg analysis of local property records and data from Pitney Bowes and Acre Value.
Normcore Was Always a Misunderstood Fantasy
https://www.ssense.com/en-us/editorial/fashion/normcore-k-hole-interview
But normcoreâs true legacy is most apparent not in our modern New Balance-ification of style but in its status as a cultural artifact that changed the way we identified, defined, and talked about trends and aesthetics today. Coining a sticky nameâwhether the trend actually exists or notâand thereby speaking an entire cultural discourse into being might have been a novel event in 2014, but these days, itâs just another week on #corecore TikTok; the dividing line between naming the thing and making it a thing has never been blurrierâand the social and real currency of the skill has never been more valuable.
Alarm bells ringing for Fannie and Freddie
https://susanpcrawford.substack.com/p/alarm-bells-ringing-for-fannie-and
At the time, the toxicity stemmed from interest-only loans, loans taken out by borrowers with low credit scores, loans with high loan-to-value ratios, loans with high debt-to-income ratios, and loans unaccompanied by paperwork. Today, the problem is different: it's loans that borrowers won't be able, ultimately, to afford because of steeply climbing premiums for property insurance due to climate change.
Increasingly pricy homeowners insurance, with its annual contracts, can make a 30-year-fixed mortgage feel to the homeowner more like an unconstrained, ballooning adjustable loan. In effect, the repricing of risk that climate change should logically cause is already happening in insurance marketsâbecause they're more liquid, less supervised, than other parts of the financial system. This regular, sharp repricing of risk makes it more likely that people in risky pockets of the country will walk away from loan obligations connected to homes that are simultaneously swiftly losing value. Even if owners are able to sell those homes, any new buyers will also have trouble with rapid insurance increases.*
How It Feels To Release "Art" In A Time of Corporate Robots
https://www.drownedinsound.org/enjoy-the-silence/
Sometimes - if the wind is blowing just right - the algorithm will pick "it" up and airlift to thousands of people. For once, you don't sigh and maybe even smile before the dopamine wears off and you're crumpling your face because you don't really know why it worked this time, you've done all the best practice stuff you would usually do and boom, it wasn't a waste of your time and creative juices.
Maybe it wasn't down to you, it just caught a freak wave of human attention somewhere, then the golden robot surfed along with you rather than ignoring you. That cold shoulder of 3 notifications (not even a like from your mum!) can leave you feeling as if there's a riptide pulling your art² out to sea never to be seen again.
More likely than not, whatever your measure of 'success' (that's a whole other rambling) it won't be down to how special 'the thing' was as to whether it reached the people you hoped it might.
Itâs the Real Thing!
https://thebaffler.com/latest/its-the-real-thing-kim
As a broader visual sensibility, however, realism refers to a style that attempts to render things âas they areâ in a self-consciously neutral manner. We can trace this sense of realism back to the Renaissance period, when scientific and mathematical developments intersected with the arts to produce a naturalist aesthetic that tried to capture the appearance of things with a higher level of pictorial accuracy. It was during this time that tools like the perspective grid were developed to translate three-dimensional space into a flat surface, while increased attention to sciences like anatomy enabled artists to render the human form with startling levels of detail. Some art historians even hypothesize that painters of this era utilized optical instruments like the camera obscura to project images onto canvases, leaning on technological aids to partially automate the visual reconstruction of reality.

Paying Respects to Press FM
https://remapradio.com/articles/call-of-duty-advanced-warfare-paying-respects-to-press-f/
In an article for the now-defunct Gaming Intelligence Agency, game developer Andrew Vestal examined an important syntactic distinction between Advanced Warfare and Arkham City. âArkham City asks the player to â[A] Pay Your Respectsâ â a complete action, with the contextual button prepended as a UI element. Call of Duty asks the player to âPress [F] to Pay Respectsâ â to push a button in a video game in order to perform the action. With this small change, the playerâs action (push a button) now overwhelms the in-game result (Pay Respects).â
âPress F to Pay Respectsâ is a ludicrous and sticky bit of language. It can be read to suggest that pressing âFâ is not the keyboard shortcut for the gesture of respect, but the gesture itself. R.I.P., sorry for your loss, thoughts and prayers, hearts go out, I really am sincerely sorry, F.

I have been hugely enjoying Animal Well in the spare moments I have to game
. It feels very perfectly sized for my gaming appetite at the moment, and is a perfect Early Morning / Before Bed game where you can get in a little exploring, and then put it down and return easily.
In a recent Fun City livestream we played about 90m of Harold Halibut, which was weird and fun and cute and thoughtful and looks amazing. It's a classic kind of enclosed-environment puzzle-solving adventure game; might pick that back up on my own â there was lots of speculation during stream about what the twist might be, and I wanna find out!
This morning, I downloaded Caves of Qud after learning about it last night, somehow, as it seems like exactly my shit and has been in active development since 2015 (!!!!!!?). Very much looking forward to putting this alongside Brogue as I thing I can play for a few minutes, all the time.

New Never Post this week! And it's a really good one: Georgia chats with Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter Hilke Schellmann about the hellish job market, and the increasing prevalence of Artificial Intelligence in hiring. Then I talk with comedian, writer and podcast host Jamie Loftus (who rules) about her show Sixteenth Minute, and the curse of becoming an Internet Main Character.
Also, the interstitials this week are a collage of every YouTube video the team watched in the last two weeks, and that was really fun to make.

That's what I got for you! I hope you enjoy â and if you didn't I hope your day gets better from here. See you in a couple weeks(ish), and drop me a line if you wanna say hey! <3 m
