joy: week 27
a bunch of movies and obsessing about the doors
Feels like this week went by in a flash. I barely remember anything I did, but maybe that’s because I didn’t really do anything special. Sometimes you go out and look at the world and find joy in nature or other people. And sometimes you stay in and make your own joy.
I consumed an awful lot of media this week. Since I got an Apple TV device, I’ve been watching things that aren’t sports. Weird, I know.
As part of my effort to watch movies I have never seen as opposed to watching the same five movies again and again I watched The Doors, the one with Val Kilmer. It was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, so I followed it up with the Charlie Brown holiday trio (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) to cleanse my palate, and boy did that work. Instant warmth. I also watched The In-Laws (very funny and good), the newest episode of “Great British Bake Off” (the show has found its way again), and, for my absolute highlight of media joy this week, I watched my first Hallmark Christmas movie of the season and it is centered around hockey, so you know I loved it. I may have kicked off Christmas movie season a little early, but I needed it and I’m glad I did. But the best thing I watched this week? Barbie. It’s honestly one of the best movies of my life. Talk about joy. I experienced several waves of extreme happiness watching Ryan Gosling play Ken. What a treasure. Barbie is so much fun, I had a smile on my face the entire movie. My review on Letterboxd:
I became a little obsessed with The Doors this week. I was a huge fan in high school, so much so that I thought of myself somewhat of a Jim Morrison expert. When I obsess about things I go all in so I bought myself a copy of The Morrison biography “No One Here Gets Out Alive” which I read so many time when I was 17/18, that my copy fell apart (it is important to know that I was high when I bought it). Well, I got four pages in and decided that 61 year old me values her time more than my 17 year old self did. Awful book. I posted on Facebook about it and in turn I got the greatest joy of my week if not my life because John Darnielle of the the Mountain Goats decided to write a poem about it:
Yes, one of my musical heroes wrote a poem about my stoned purchase of a terrible book about a terrible person whom I once idolized. It doesn’t get more joyful than that. It’s a wonderful poem that really captures the spirit of my whole Doors deal.
Other things this week: my ten year old iPad stopped working so I splurged and bought myself a new one, just to play games and read, but also to use as a third screen for busy sports nights. If you have any suggestions for cool iPad games let me know. I like word games, hidden objects, and solving puzzles. Bonus if it has nice graphics.
Pixie got spayed this week and when I picked her up I signed the adoption papers so she is officially mine even though she was mine from the first second I saw her.
I belong to a fan club of sorts for the National and they send out packages to members occasionally. Got this yesterday and was overjoyed. Socks! A double album of live National! Amazing!
So yea, I had a good week even if I didn’t do anything outside the house. Next week I am headed to Rhode Island for a sisters weekend, where we will have pre-Halloween festivities and maybe carve some pumpkins and force my sisters to watch Barbie. I hope your week was equally good or better. I will leave you with my Letterboxd review of the Doors movie.
