Captain’s log
September was a pretty eventful but also tough month for me. A few highlights:
- I held a macro photography contest which received thousands of photo submissions, and I found some truly astounding entries that became the winners. That was a lot of fun and something I will definitely do again.
- I also tried to spend three days all by myself in a cottage on a remote island, and made a video about that experience.
- Surprisingly, one of the most popular videos I posted was the one where I explain macro photography diffraction. I thought that would be a very niche subject, but many seem to be interested!
- I ditched Squarespace to save some money and made a new homepage in Carrd, a super cheap service to make small website. I am very pleased with the result and how easy Carrd is to work with. Highly recommended budget option!
What made the month tough? The kids were home from preschool with colds A LOT, so I didn’t get a lot of time to work unfortunately. And I caught iritis, an eye inflammation that basically destroyed the vision on my right eye for most of the month, and required some time in the hospital. It took longer than I expected to heal, probably due to the atropine treatment that makes my right pupil enlarged, and still today my vision is a bit blurry on the right eye. This is the reason I haven’t done a lot of photography in the last few weeks. But according to my eye doctor it is healing fine and I should be fully restored to normal soon. Let’s hope that’s true.

Very cool animation
I found this extremely cool focus stacked animation of a dead wasp. It must have taken tens of thousands of photos to create. Truly astounding!
